Charles Ba ker, a 'longshoreman on the ill fated Mexico, makes the following statement: There were twenty three 'longshoremen from Seattle aboard, and counting the officers and crew the steamer had 102 per sons all told. She left Nanajmo about 7 o'clock in the evening coal laden for Seattle. I had turned i about fifteen minues when the ship struck. I first thought it was a collision, but go ing on deck found the bow well up on the rock. I saw the tug Alexander towing the ship Card in to sea. Judging from her course our ship must have been at least five miles out of her course. The weather was very thick and stormy. AVe went on the rocks about a quarter to one o'clock Thursday morning. The concussion threw me out of my bunk. I think we were going about 12 knots an hour. The place we struck was nearly opposite Roberts Point. We fired a cannon, signaling as sistance and were taken by the Princess Louise to Victoria. All the 'longshoremen and a part of the crew were taken from the ship j'estenlay. The captain was in charge, 1 think, up to 12 or half past. Wt'g had passed through. Plumper pass. There were no boats lowered until 0 o'clock Fri day morning. The pilot is con sidered a very, good one. This I know, for 1 have been up that way a great many times." HISTORY OF THE VESSEL. The Mexico is an American screw steamer, hailing from New York, built in San Francisco in 1S81 by Dickie Bros, and strongly constructed, of yellow fir, iron and copper fastenings; length 27 feet, beam 26 feet, depth of hold 20.5 feet. At the last survey, held in San Francisco March, 1SS2, her registered tonnage was 1,34-1, gross 1,797; 220 horse power engines. The vessel was built and intended for the Mexican trade originally between San Francisco and Pana ma. The owners, Birmingham & Hartshorn, of San Francisco, find ing she was too large a vessel to be profitable on that route, char tered her to the Pacific Coast Steamship company for $200 per da'. She has run in the trade be tween San Francisco and sound ports ever since. She was pruba bly insured pre.ttv near her value. She was worth " about 260,000. Capt. Huntington has been in her ever since she was built. She is one of the finest steamships on the PaciGc coast, and the company s agents here have telegraphed Goodall, Perkins & Co., San Fran cisco agents, for instructions. The steamship Umatilla, Capt. D. O. Blackburn, will take the freight which was intended for the Mex ico to San Fraucisco. She would a'D take passengers but is not fit ted for passenger traffic. It is now conceded by many that ten pounds pf good pressed hay is equivalent to about thir teen pounds of loose hay. This belief carries witlrit the claim that the nourishing qualities of the hay are much more fully retained in the pressed bale. It is certain ly true that there is a much small er percentage of waste. The storage space ior a given number of tons is also much to the credit of pressed hay. "Where this article of stock food is high, priced, this is a serious question with those even who put up hay for their own usq only. There is a great need of a machine 7that is cheap enough in price to be with in reach of a farmer, to be used for baling an ordinary crop of hay for his own use. WORTH KNOWING. A remarka ble spectacle, the like of which was never before witnessed in an American city, was presented Sat urday night at the headquarters of the Chicago police department. The officers of the central detail were quietly standing in ranks for roll call, when their highest supe rior, chief of polic. Frederick T. Ebersold, entered the guard room. He spoke a few words in an un dertone to Lieut. Fitzpatrick, and then in a voice full ol suppressed feeling, addressing the ranks said: "Men, next Tuesday I want you to rember the 4th of May. Think of the men who threw the bomb and killed yoar comrades when you put in your votes and vote. every one of you! vote for mw and order. There is no politics iu this fight. It is for good govern ment; it is against anarchy; it is for law and order." The blue coated auditors scarceH breathe d "With eyes strained hard and teeth clinched they stood as motionless and silent as stone. When the chief ceased, the order to break ranks was unheeded for a moment not a man stirred. Then, re gardless of the imperative rule re quiring them to go at once to their beats, the stalwart men in blue crowded around the speaker, ex claiming: "We will; we will!" "That's right; it's against anarchy." Chief Ebersold seemed much ag itated, and gave each of the men a warm word or encouraging look, as they hurriedly withdrew to their duty. Men With Opinions. Men who are prominent iu the world of business or politics are almost invariably men of con siderable strengtli of chaiacter, and this generallv shows itself in the expression of heir faces, as well as in their ordinary conver sation. Several well-known poli ticians and newspaper men were talking together in a New York hotel, recently. "Do we look like a company of civil service reform ers?" asked one of them of a gentleman who came up to the group. "Not at all," was the re ply, ,fl took you for rejected jurymen men who have opinions. Constipation Has Many Victim-. While the czar was walking on a terrace overlooking the lawn at Gatchina place last Friday a shot was tired Irom behind a bush. The bullet whistled close to the czar's ear. A second shot was fired from behind another bush, but without effect. A sentinel near fired upon the first assassi p, and is reported to have killed him on the spot. The second assas sin tried to escape, but was ar rested. He proved to be an officer of the army. (lucLlciiN Arnica .Sitlw.
