ViVinitv At an early hour yestorday morn ing the rain stopped falling moment arily and the wind iu great surprise came Fcreeching over the sheltering shoulder of the hills to tho south west to see why. As the clouds rolled away and tho stars shone ont, the gusts increased in forco and fre quency and by three o'clock the wind was blowing at the rate of fifty-five miles an honr. It knocked at doors and flung open shutters; it rattled the sash and swayed the windows; it shook the houses and lifted the porch eaves; it knocked over loose fences, howled iu the halls, fluttered the pa per on the walls, creaked the signs, swung the wires till the Rro alarm sounded, roared iu the attics, b.mged and hammered up aud down tho streets, and whistling in the rigging of the vessels in the stream woke the sailors to find that they wc-c dragging their anchors. Then it flew out to sea, and with increased din and fury it met other roisterons spirits of the vasty deep and shrieked up and down the coast till sunrise. In the city there was no damage done; from tho river come reports of one vessel bumping into Booth's can nery, of tho Lady Isabella and Sir Henry Lawrence being forced from their moorings onto the sands, with, happily, no damage, and over from Knappton is reported serious loss to a family named Butts, who had started from up the river to go to the North Shore Packing company, with some $800 or $900 worth of gear to work there during tho season. When tho storm struck the scow it sent it in wreck on the shore, the gear being all lost; the occupants "managed to get away in a small boat and reached Knappton at daybreak. At Three Tree point two fishing boats went ashore, the men escaping, and at the Barbary coast, near Pillar Bock, two more boats were also driven ashore. Some cannery boats broke loose aloug the river front, but were regained, aud when the force of the sou'wester is considered, tho wonder is that there was less of casualty.
