Dorted here last nierht that Marina Lebaya, a notorious outlaw, des Derado and leader of the ffang who have terrorized central New' Mexico for six months, had been killed while resisting arrest, near Antelope Springs, seventy miles "south of this place. The report was confirmed to-day by the arrival of Joaquin Montera and Carlos Jaconie, with his body. They were deputized by Sheriff Chavez, of Santa Fe county, to make Jthe arrest, and met Lebaya on the mountain trail while on the look out for him. "When ordered to surrender the outlaw pulled a pistol and Montera and .laconic pulled theirs. The three shots sounded like one, and Montera got a bullet through his hat, but Lebaya fell dead at his feet, shot through the head. Lebaya led the gang that mur dered Colonel Charles Patter, step son of Governor Van Randt cf Rhode Island, in the Dolores mountains, in 1S80, and buried the body after taking several hun dred dollars irom it. Four of the gang were captured by Sheriff Armitag, and taken to Albu querque, where they were lynched. Lebaya, the fifth member, hid in the mountains, but came out and began operations again after all the witnesses were dead. He was afterward convicted of stealing and sent up for five years to the penitentiary. When he was dis charged six months ago, he imme diately returned to the flourishing mining country and organized a gang. They would shoot up to the towns and steal horses and rob travelers. ' The last outrage was the murder and robbery of Lackey and Tesier near Antelope Springs. These men owned 200, 000 sheep. Lackey was killed in his house and his body was burned. Tesiertw&Sishot- in the back while running away. Two of Lebaya's gang were arrested for the mur der, and are now held for trial. A reward of $10,000 was offered for Lebaya. His death will break up the gang. Many people visited the Santa Fe. jail to-day nfid viewed the body. The people of southern New Mexico are greatly pleased over the death of the ou' law and are thoroughly organi .! for the suppression of the rest of the band. Tue Stomach Distil Acid. Conn. TJnger's Ugly Umbra. New York, March 31. Ed- ward Unger, formerly of llwaco, who was sent to Sing Sing for life for the murder of August Bohl, is now in the hospital of the prison, a sufferer from 'nervous prostra tion. " His physical strength before his trial was great, and his steadi ness of nerve in court was sur prising; but his stamina is all gone, and he has become a miserable, cowering wreck. On the first morning in the prison he told a keeper that he had been visited during the night by his dismem bered victim, who had proceeded to reconstruct himself in the ter rified prisoner's presence. Of this dream he. could not be disabused. He Seemed to believe it was real ity. Every night it came to him, and at the end of a week he was much broken down. Tn the prison hospital it has been the same with him except wben he is kept very soundly asleep under narcotic in fluence. He dreams that the man gled pieces of his friend are strewn about the room, where they lie awhile inanimately, as they did before he packed the body in the trunk and threw the head into the river. Then the fragments begin to quiver. Soon they move slowly toward each other, until they are a heap. Next they adjust them selves into a human form. But the head is missing. At length that, too, comes into the room, with its hair dripping with the water of the river in which it has lain. "With its horrible smile on its face, it places itself on the shoulders of the figure, and men aces the murderer. Unger shrieks at this point and the apparition vanishes from his imagination. All efforts have failed to relieve him of these visions, and the oris- ou physician advises his removal to the state asylum for lunatic criminals. - . t& : i Erysipelas and Obstinate Ulcers, Boils, Carbuncles and Running Sores ol every kind are cleansed, the poison germs destroyed and a speedy cure cfieetcd by using Darby Prophylactic Fluid.
