Slater, of LaGrande, ex-United States senator, the Democratic member of the rail road commission. It has hereto fore been the general impression that R. F. Gibons, of The Dalles, the defeated candidate for secreta ry of state, would be named for that pobition. In fact Air. Gibnns was some time since offered the appointment, but he asked until the 25th inst. to consider whether or not he should accept, the rear son for this reque?t being presum ably thatahe was an applicant for appointment us collector of cus toms at Portland, and he thought that by that time he would know whether or not he would receive the coveted office. On the 23th Mr. Gibons declined the appoint ment tendered by Gov. Pennoyer, and the latter immediately offered it to Senator Slater. Mr. Slater has not been heard from, but he is expected to arrive in Salem to day. Don't be a fool," she said with a snap to her husband. "Why didn't you tell me that when I asked you to marry me?" he re plied, and silence fell upon that house. ONA And reliable Xedicincs are lm liftcf in ilo.nc-nA 111)011.
