The Empire Store is getting in a fine line of goods, bought at low fig ures and sold at slight advance. At the M. E. church to-morrow the morning subject will be "Chris tian Perfection;" at 7 i. sr "Popular amusements, especially games of chance.and the modern dance." Seats free. The Ro.ie Olscn, which went to sea several days ago, was. stilll off the mouth of the river Thursday evening, but, the wind being fair, has probably reached her destination at Tillamook by this tine. It is time now for the business men of this city to whoop up the subscrip tion list if they want the fireman's tournament for Oregon and Wash ington held hero in .Tune Vanc-ou-ver Register. B. S. Worsley, at his regular ae this morning at 11 o'clock, will dis pose of a consignment of choice ci gars and a large assortment of gener al merchandise and new and second hand furniture. Over a ton of bill heads and letter heads were received at The Astobiax job office yesterday. They won'tlast very long, as the low prices at which they are furnished insures speedy distribution. The ladies' sewing society of the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran church propose to sell a collection of various articles worked by members o the society, at the upper Astoria church next Wednesday evening. Those oil paintings in the store next to A. Y. Allen's will receive final disposition by E. C. Holden this evening, and any one who has not yet secured one will have opportunity this afternoon or evening. The sale will be at 7:30 p.m. Sometime ago some generously dis posed citizens clubbed together and sent for an artificial leg for J. B. Os borne of Williamsport Yesterday it arrived and was tried on by the grat ified recipient and found to be in every way satisfactory. Articles have been filed in the office of the secretary of state, incorpor ating the Finnish Brotherhood, of Astoria; the incorporators are Chas. Larson, Jacob Moore, Alexander E. Allen, Gustaf Maketa, and Emanuel Manuela; property amounts to 533. A detachment of the Salvation Army has been viewing this outpost of Zion for several days with a view to laying siege to the works, and a suitable location having., been pro cured the next move will be to give his Satanic majesty a biff on the nose. The bright sunshine of the past few days has started half the town to cleaning house, and 'twould mako a lazy man shudder to see the carpets on the - fence and the big club to knock out the carpets, and the white wash brush, and all the rest of the disturbance. C' H. Cooper had about as big a consignment in the way of 'trunks yesterday as usually comes to Asto ria. From the pile it looked as though there were two carloads of them. He is long on trunks and will furnish a good article of that sort at a very low figure. H. E. Nelson sustained a sort of compound accident last Thursday, being scalded by the upsetting of Borne .boiling water he was carrying. and cut on the ear by the sharp edge of a can, both disasters, fortunately, being productive of nothing more se rious than a few hours' pain. The tug Donald arrived in yester day, three days from San Francisco. She will tow here in conjuction with the Wizard or Escort, one of the lat ter of which will probably return to San Francisco. This would leave four regular tugs here for bar service, the Pioneer, Escort or Wizard, As toria and Donald. According to the best accounts pro curable, "spring" will begin at five o'clock, standard time, to-morrow af ternoon. Let's see: 'tis occasionally showery in the gentle spring time. Tennyson sayo "In the spriug a brighter iris glows upon tho bur nished dove; in the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love," which is probably the case, more or less. W. E. Warren, Wallace Stuart, Henry Wetherill, and two or threo others are reported about to buy a schooner in San Francisco and go cruising to Alaska for seals. They expect to put out about $6,500 in the fitting up of an 80 foot vessel that cost $16,000 four years ago. The Venture is being fitted up at II waco on the same errand aud the projectors expect to get away about May 1st. The bark Trinidad, 675, Dyer mas- ter, 145 days from Liverpool, arrived in yesterday, with tin plate and gen eral carge: the British bark Glenfarg, Sol, Watt master. 112 days from Lon don, with cement and general carge: the British bark Warwick Castle, 1.158, Hutton master, from Guynias, and the British ship Lady salt ;, 1,401, Congdou master, from Sauta Eosalia, in ballast, arrived in. The pilot schooner Gov. Moody also came iu jwlerday morning. To-night the Stuttz New York Theatrical company will play ''East Lynne.' The occasion will be the tender of a benefit to the assistance fund of the Columbia Biver Fisher men's Protective "Union. The com pany opened a week's engagement by a benefit to the Astoria Firo Depart ment, have presented some excellent plays during the week, and will to night act Mrs. Henry Wood's master piece, a part ot the proceeds to bo applied, as stated to the assistance fund ot the Columbia Biver Fisher men's Protective Union. There will doubtless be a laage audience. Re served seats without extra charge at the New York Novelty Store. Yesterday, says the On-gonian of the 18th, 10,000 pounds of fresh Chi nook salmon was shipped by express j to New York and Chicago, making a total for the week of S0,000 pound?. This is the first time any considerable shipments were made so early in the season, and commissioner Batchford and other New York epicures will no doubt be surprised, as well as pleased, to have the royal Chinook for dinner next Sunday. Last year the first big lot slarted east April 15. The rain of yesterday will probabh' occasion an other ran of salmon up the Columbia, which will be a good thing for fisher men and dealers, because in the east, as on the coast, salmon bring bettor prices in retail markets earlv linn late m the season, and th transportation better. btar AstonKluns Snores. Housekeepers who do their own housework are saved numberless little expenses by looking after the small things that a servant is apt to neglect. Rusty tins and saucepans are never seen because they aro always dried thoroughly before settiug away in the pantry; white-handled dinner knives do not become discolored and cracked, because they are never washed iu hot water, aud the haudles are polished with a little whiting once a fortnight or so; s'lver is kept bright and clean without frequent polishing, because it is washed in hot soap suds directly after use; and the wood box and kitchen pantry are kept so clean and free from all scraps of food that bugs are unknown. To brighten up a dusty -Brussels or ingrain carpet sprinkle it with coarse salt and sweep .with a hard, dry broom. Very heavy parlor carpets should be swept twice, first with a hard broom to remove all dirt, and then with a soft one a half hour later to remove the dust. If the windows at both back and front are thrown open and the room swept the way of the wind most of the dust will go out through the windows instead of trav eling back oyer the swept portion and settling on pictures and furniture. Lamp burn era should be boiled once a week in a strong solution of soda and water. After breakfast on Saturday, it they are dropped into an old kettle and left on the stove for an hour, then rinsed iu clear hot water and thoroughly dried, they will burn twice as well. Chimneys should be washed in warm suds, rinsed and pol ished with chamois or old paper. Many dwellers in crowded fl it buildings aud even m private hou.s.-, have recently discovered that news papers spread tinder and between mattresses are excellent preventives against vermin. Newspapers placed under carpets are also said to protect them against moths. Coffee left over from breakfast should be strained into a cup or bowl, and may be turned into a de lusions pudding as follews: Take a pint of milk and put on to boil; thick en to a ci earn with three teaspoon fuls corn starch; then add a half-cup of sugar. Stir in a cup of tho cold coffee, boil for five minutes, flavor with a little vanilla, remove from tho fire and beat in the white of an egg; pour into a mold and eat cold. i Gilt for All. On or about the 30th day of Au gust, 18S3 ono of tho most atrocious and cold blooded murders that was ever committed on the Pacific coast was perpetrated on the Cowlitz river in Lewis county, Washington Terri tory, the victim being August Pickler, a mau who had recently arrived in that territory witu the intention of settling and makiug a home iu what is known as the Big Bottom, on Cow litz river, in Lewis county. Pickler was supposed Jo have considerable money about his person and on his way from Chehalis, the county seat, he stopped at the house of one Eu gene Dnvaul, who had recently settled in or near the Big Bottom country, and spent tho night of August 29th at his house, and on the followiug morning set out for his intended f n ture home, a tract of land that he had selected and filed on for a homestead. From the time of leaving Duvaul's house on the morning of the 30th of August be was never seen by any one except Dnvaul until his mutilated body wa3 found on the 12th of Sep tember, a period of thirteen days from the time he left Duvaul's house, and at a point about fivo miles dis tant therefrom, on tho trail leading up the Cowlitz river. The long absence of Pickler aroused the suspicions of the few settlers in the neighborhood and search was made for tho missing man, whoso body was found iu a hole from whence a tree had been uprooted, within three or four rods of the trail. An investigation by a coroner's jury showed that a blow had bpen given on the back of tho head with a club or such instrument, a bullet hole was found in the top of tho head and the head almost severed from the body with a knife, which lay near by. The murder remained a mystery for more than year when circumstances seemed to point toward tho man Duvaul and one Richard Trousdale who seemed to tako a very active part in trying to ferret out the murderers. Noth ing however, developed until the last grand jury of Lewis county, on the 7th of February, sufficient evidence was secured to warrant the finding of an indictment against the parties referred to; a warrant was accord ingly issned aud placed in the hands of the sheriff of Lewis county, who immediately began a search for the supposed mnrderers. In a fow days thereafter Sheriff S. H. Claughton found and arrested Engeno Du vaul near Sumuer, iu Pierce county, "W. T." Dnvaul was taken in irons to Chehalis, by the sheriff aud lodged in jail. Trousdale's whereabouts were unknown, but ho was supposed to bo somewhere iu the Willamette valley. The sheriff se cured a requisition from tho governor of Oregon who issned a warrant on the "3rd inst, and, armed with this, sheriff Claughton went to Hubbard station on the O. & C. R. R., expect ing to find his mau; but tho bird had flown and was supposed to beiu East Portland.. That city was thoroughly scoured, but no clue could be had. Albinn, Portland and Astoria were searched by the sheriff, aided by tho police, but no clue to the whereabouts of the wanted man. The sheriff then returned to Port land, and after another effort, suc cee le 1 in getting on the riglii track, which ho hastily followed to a place n the Nebalem river, in Tillamook county. From there the fugitive was tracked to a lonely aud secluded little valley far out in the mountains, called by hunters, "God's valley." Here the man wa3 found and put in irens: and on Thursday, tho 17th inst., sheriff Ulaughton arrived in this city with his prisoner, having encountered the heaviest stovm3 of the season and the hardships incident to the troublesome trail to and from Ocean Peak. The snow on the trail was in many plaoes from four to six feet deep, the moun tain streams were s.vollen and run ning bank full; tho river bottoms were overflowed, and when the land appeared, the mud was a foot deep. Twice tho shorifi' was precipitated into tho water and barely escaped drowning; he was dashed a trains t a tree by a vicious horse and severely Druiseu, but managed to got through with his prisoner all right. lie is now in this citv reruitinrr. and will start on his way home this morning witn ins prisoner.
