To night they give "A Celebrated Case." The question of ownership of the deep sea fishing net has been decided by Justice Cleveland, the ownership being awarded to S. McKenzie. the defendant. Messrs Bergman, Christenseu and Hauven are building a boat on Young's river to accommodate the growing trade of that section. It will be called the Frolic aud will cost S4,000. Those fine oil paintings have ar rived and will be on exhibition in the store next to A. V. Allen's, to-morrow evening. The collection is worth seeing and a general invitation is ex tended. The appropriation being exhausted, uo more meteorological reports from the bar via Astoria to the other of fices. The treasury is bursting with money. The little S500 stingily and grudgingly inserted to repair the ca ble was also denied; still the treasury funds pile up. It ia reported that the prospecting force of men on Lewis and Clarke's, engaged in selecting suitable rock for the jetty, has been discharged. It is in contemplation to shortly place a corps of engineers in the field to makea preliminary survey for a line of railroad from Fort Stevens to a suitable point on the Lewis and Clarke's. C. B. Watson returned yesterday from ti trip through the inland em pire where he has been showing the tangible benefit and proposed work ings of the invention recently made by Wm. A.-Grondahl to overcome the difficulties of upper Columbia navi gation. In the several places ho vis ited lie met with much encourage ment and success. Deputy TJ. S. Marshal Boss yester day libeled the Gov. Newell, on the Walluski at Mayor Trullinger's rail road camp, at the instance of Capt. Jas. Cox, who sues for wages as mas ter, to the-amount of $3,000. Bonds will be furnished this morning for the release "of the boat. The case will come up before Jhdgo Deady on the 4th of next month. Several canneries aro busy making cans and a considerable amount of gear is being put in readiness, though it is probable little will be done-iu the way of catohing fish for fiye weeks yet The April fishing is particular ly destructive to gear and otherwise unsatisfactory, and the tendency ev ery season is to push the beginning of the season toward the 1st of May. An exchange remarks "that men who are advertised in their papers are the men who transact the business of the town. You can pick up a news paper, and in a few minutes tell who does the buying and selling and keep alive the interest of the place. A newspaper invariably reflects the worth, the enterprise and intelligence of the communitv in which it is pub lished." The last legislature appropriated in all $41,000 to pay its own expenses, exclusive of the printing. Of this amount, says the Telegram, S34, 063.75 has been paid out by the state treasurer, and there still remain out- standingjwarrants which will bring the sum up to somewhere in the vicinity of 40.000, about $1,000 under the limit et by the legislature. It has been estimated by the secretary of state that the printing will coBt near $10,000; and so the total expense of the late session willapproach $50,000. In the Mo ran case a continuance was granted till Friday. THE TEHRIBLE RAILROAD DISASTER. Boston, Mar. 15. A revised list of the injured by the accident on the Boston nnd Providence railroad, yes terday, shows a total of 114; a gang of laborers were engaged all night in clearing away the wreclr; At day light a ropo was stretched to keep the crowds of spectators at a distance. Two of the cars are nothing but kind ling. The wreck is even more appall ing than the White river Junction ruins. KIRK AT RfFKAfjO. Buffalo, March 15. The large brick building of Miller. Greener & Co., was burned this moruiug; I he walls fell, nnd in. half nn hour the building and contents were an entire loss; the loss on the building is S200.000, nnd on the contents $250,- 000. It is heavily insured! The up per floor was occupied by a masonic hall: loss, S35.000; insurance $20,000. TIIE BIQ RAILROAD DEATj. New York, March 15. The latest regarding the big railroad deal Bays the Baltimore Ohio railroad has passed into the hands of a syndicate; it is also stated that Jay Gould ha3 secured quarter interest. "Buasel Sago is also in the syndicate: the Western Union Co. also secures the telegraph; the Adams Express Co. gets the express business; the Penn sylvania Band gets the read: it is said all the details wera arranged last night. t'EItSONA!.. There Was a Sure Enough Rat. A citizen Buffering from an ulcer ated tooth sought relief in the flow ing bowl, much to his wife's alarm. One night ho came home about ten o'clock, and as he entered the house he saw a big rat. To seizo the poker aud go for it was the work of an in stant, and in the ohase that followed the rat rushed into the bedroom where the man's wife was about going to bed. She didn't see the rat, and was naturally agitated at seeing her husband in boots, overcoat and cap, banging away with the poker and yelling: "I'll have that rat if I die for it." ''Oh dear, there s no rat here," she said; but he kept right on hammered on some of her clothing that lay on a lounge, nnd then tri umphantly held np the dead body of the rat The wife looked at it a mo ment nnd then, in accents of inex pressible relief, said: "Thank heaven, there was a rat after all." Unuerexsary Misery. Washington, Mar. 14 The only veracious account of how the presi dent reached a conclusion to refuse approval of the river and harbor bill is this: When he came to the meas ure, in the course of his hurried ex amination of bills he sent for secre tary of war Endicott. "How about this river and harbor appropriation?" he asked. "Haven't you got some of the money left over?" "Oh, yes," replied Mr. Endicott, who shares the eastern antipathy to the system of internal, improvements, "we have $15,000,000 or $10,000,000. "What do they mean by sending me such a thing as this, then?" exclaimed Mr Cleveland, angrily. He threw the bill aside and did not-further refer to the matter. The V. C. T. l Entertainment. The Japaneso Bazaar and High Tea, at the Y. M. C. A. rooms under the anspices of the Woman's Chris tian Temperance Union last evening was an occasion of unmingled pleas ure to those who partook or partici pated. Upstairs was the department of the ajsthetic; below were set tables to supply the more material wants prompted by appetite. The second story was haudsomely decorated, one end of the room being devoted to a fancy work table on which were a multitude of articles of unique construction, Japanese make, of use, ornament and display, prettily arranged, and moat attractively be stowed; this table was presided over bv Mrs. tieo. W. Snyder, Mrs. J. Q. A. Bowlby, Mrs. W. W. Parker. Mrs. Jas. A. Davidson, Mrs. J. L. Stout, Miss E. C. Warren, cashier: Missi Dora Badollet, Miss Wilson, nnd Miss Huntington. Of the Inrge number who attended each purchased some little souvenir of the occasion, aud thougb the articles were both attrac tive and low priced so great was their profusion that some remain, which the ladies will offer for sale from two to five this afternoon. On the first floor some handsome tea tables were arranged, and a splen did lunch served to all who called. At one table Mrs. J. E. Higgins, Miss Katie Flavol, Miss Minnie War ren and Chas. Higgins, officiated; at another, Mrs. O. B. Whitmore, and Miss Davis; at another, Mrs. G. W. Bucker, Mrs. C. Brown. Mrs. A. C. Kinney and Mis3 Lilie Hewlett; at a third, "Graudma'Tox, Mrs. Jas. Fox, Mrs. J. G. Charters; at a fourth, Mrs. C. H. Cooper, Mrs. J. McCormac, Mrs. Gibson. The tables were well patronized, and all present enjoyed the evening. Astonishing Success. The city council met in adjourned session la3t evening, councilman Bergman, president of the council, in the chair, a full board present. The proceedings began at 8:20. A propo sition from Arndt & Ferchen was read, offering to duplicate the boiler for the engino of Astoria No. One, for $1,0S0, that sum to include the taking out of the old boiler and replacing the same with the new boiler and furnishing all the necesstiry fittings, connections, first class work being guaranteed. A proposition from the Astoria Iron Works was read, offering to build a steel boiier for that engine, for $1,200, that to include disconnect ing old boiler and connecting new one, furnishing all the necessary fit tings and connections, guaranteeing! first class worn, lo complete within 30 davs from date of contract, and furnish bonds for the faithful per formance of the work. A motion au thorizing the city to enter into a con tract for the building of a bciler for that engine, was passed. A communication was received trom the board of fire delegates, re questing that the council require all parties becoming members of any fire company to deposit the price of a department badge, -to be refunded when the said party withdraws from the department, and that the conncil buy a few more badges for present use. Referred to fire committee. A remonstrance against the pro posed improvement of Hemlock street, numerously signed, was read, and, ou motion, was granted. A memorial from numei ous prop erly owners, calling the attention of tho council to the condition of the property in the vicinity of blks. 112 and 36, McClure's Astoria, was road, and, on motion, referred" to street committee. A communication from F. 11. Stokes asking that the liquor license of Jno. Enkela be transferred to Martin Em po, after sone debate, was granted, tho oity attorney stating that the law forbid any transfer of retail liquor license. A petition from Pine street prop erty owners asking for the improve ment of Pine street from the west side of East 5th streot to the east sido of claim line of the city of Astoria, was granted. A communication from street su perintendent Logan, calling the at tention of the counoil to the condition of Hemlock street, a debate following which elicited considerable hilarity. An ordinance authorizing the com mittee on streets.to enter into a con tract with the Astoria Gaslight Co., was passed under suspension of the rules. An ordinance establishing the grade of Cedar street was passed un der suspension of the rules. The reports of street superintend ent and police judge for February wore read nnd referred. An ordinance amending ordinance No. 180 was passed under suspension of tho rules. Tho following bills woro ordered paid: J. Ericsson. S23.60; Gragg & Co., 8195.50; J. 'G. Hustler, $99.04; Jno.
