ra g .- '$-i Wwt glaHjj gistoriaw. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY MAKCH it. ISSl PASSED AWAY. Hexky Waud BnECiiEK died at 7:30 yesterday morning. "When such a man as Beecher dies the world halts for a moment to hear the news. Few men have left a deeper im press upon contemporary thought than he. Born in Litchfield, TJonn., June 2-1, lSl'J, he graduated at Amherst college, and being ordained, in the Congregational ministry, took charge of a small church in Indi anapolis, Indiana, removing from there in 1S-17 to Brooklyn, where, as pastor of "Plymouth church," he gained a name that was spoken wherever civilization found an echo. He was probably the most orig inal man in the American pulpit, and his oratorical powers being of the finest, his sermons, lectures and discourses attracted universal in terest in their spoken ard written form. He was full of life, physical and spiritual; full of causalty; with scant reverence for creed or dog ma; interpreting all things natural and supernatural as he saw it; at first orthodox; then ''liberal;1' fi nally agnostic. Ordinary religion he had none; self-denial was but an ideal qual ity to him; he lived to enjoy and his great brain forever teemed with the song of joyous nature. To thousands throughout the Unioj Jbe was a perpetual delight. He said so iriTury things that were in the hearts and almost on the lips of many of his readers and hearers; he was so broad in his denunciation of narrowness; so caustic in his excoriation of hypoc risy; so grandly genial in his ex position of the charms of the spirit-intellectual; so lofty in elo quent, enunciation of ennobling sentiments, that he compelled ad miration from many who declined to agree with him. In politics he stood foremost in the battle for freedom and the rights of man. In 1SG3, when Gladstone was congratulating Jefferson Davis on being "the founder of a new em pire," when in the English ship yards were building vessels to sweep American commerce from the sea: when our "transatlantic cousins" were doing all they could to cripple the north, Beecher went to JSnglamLand in a series of great addresses did as much as an' one man could do to change public opinion, and thus aid the country in its struggle for an undivided Union. On his return ho was at the zenith of his fame and second to no-American in popularity. Of late years, despite his match less orator', brilliant thoughts and great genius, his vagaries alienated many, disgusted more, and disap pointed all. The sunset of hi- life was unsatisfactory. He lived too long for permanent fame and the glory of his early manhood and matnrer prime is maned by the memory of more recent years. When all is over and poor hu manity, whether lofty or lowly, passes to earthly dissolution and spiritual absence, it is as Geo. Herbert saj-s: "Only the actions of tho just Smell sweet and blossom in tho dust." Such sempiternal blossom is de nied to the great man who ex pired yesterda'. Under the circumstances the following, being the closing sen tences of Beecher 's last sermon delivered at Plymouth church Sun day morning, February 27th, are interesting. They are his last public utterance: The Jesus that healed upon the earth is mightier yet; restored to the power of the spiritual condition he is fuller of mercy aud of-sympathy, and there is no creature that is not under his eye, and no want on our part that does not interest him. Come boldly to the throne of grace and rest in him. Trust his goodness and you shall go away relieved, if not healed, even a little., A silent touch cannot take place" on his outer -garment, as it wereand he not know it. He thrills to yourwant as you do not to your own want. There is in these higher states of mind of which I have been speaking, a remedy. "When you bring yourself to the very atmosphere and into com munion through your highest life with the life of Jesus, there is the remedy. Your sorrows are no longer sorrowful; your cares are no longer searching. Your burdens are no longer heavy, your cross is light and life itself goessinging with you into life eternal, from glory unto glory The Colville Jlincr was recent ly reduced in size, which was probably productive of some com plaint by dissatisfied subscribers, to whom the editor talks as fol fel fol eows: ""We have had a number of inquiries asking why we did not cut down the size of the subscrip tion price accordingly. About all the reply we have to make to the interrogatories is, that as long as whisky is ten cents a glass, regard less of the size of the drink, we fail to see any reason why a fel low, who never lends his patronage to any journal, should make any noise about the size or price of a struggling country newspaper." The Seattle Post-Intel iienm- says, a "White river farmer recent ly sold a quantity of hay to a Seat tle produce firm at $10 per ton. The hay was not delivered, but re mained in the farmer's barn. The other day the farmer noticed that the hay he had reserved for him self would not keep his stock until spring grass comes, and he came into town and paid tho pro luce firm a bonus of $7 per ton to allow him to keep the hay. There were thirty tons of hay involved in the contract, and the produce dealers cleared S3 10. Brace Up.
