It is plain that the engine of Asto ria No. One's needs u new boiler, am tbo quicker the sooner. From what our eastern Oregon ex changes say ice oughtn't to bo more than ton cents a pound next summer. It is thought to be not improbable that the tug Columbia will be taken to Coos bay by Capt, McGee, next month. Pilots and river men say that take it altogether this has been the rough est and stormiesf winter in these parts for ten vears. The lighting of. the streets other than those illuminated by the electric light, was resumed last night, to the great convenience of residents. Marriage licenses were issued dur ing the week to Jacob Kuzala and Amy Honkala, Clement Orteig and Elsie Nichols, Wm. Christiansen and Carrie Jasperson. The shipment of 5,499 cases on the Bulloehmylc, together with eastern shipments overland, goes far toward cleaning out the entire salmon pack of '86 from the Columbia river. Governor Pennoyer has the ap pointment of about forty-four more officers, and a good many applicants are anxious to know the worst or best, and be relieved of suspense. The district court for Lewis county, W. T., was in session at Chehalis "a few days ago, and four ladies were on the jury, notwithstanding the adverse woman suffrage decision of the su preme court. The horses which were kept at Two's engine house during the cold weather for use in case of need, were sent home yesterday morning. For tunately their active services were not required. From the 1st mst to date, I. Shlu ter, T. C. Bobbins, Michael McCar ron, D. Harnolich, N. Petersen, J. M. Samuel, Chas. A. Lindholm and Peter Sund had issued unto them first citi zenship papers. Governor Pennoyer has vetoed two more bills, one making it compulsory on all children of school age in the state to attend school for twelve weeks in each year, and one creating the office of reporter of the supreme court. Seattle wants the general govern ment to pay S1,1G7, losses sustained by Chinese residents in the riot last spring The congressional commit tee on claims recommends that the claim be allowed. There is going to be a dance at Henderson's place on Young's river to-night and abont forty of Astoria's dancers will bo on hand, each with his best girl. The boat will leave Wilson & Fisher's dock at half past seven this evening. Yesterday the county records were transferred to the new vault, a much needed improvement. Under the present arrangement tho books of record nro safe from fire. The now arrangement will give County Clerk Trenchard and Mr. Dickinson more room. Three cases of what is said to be diphtheria is reported from upper town, though it is thought probable to be tonsilitis. Physicicians report a good deal of sickness in the city, J occasionea largely oy tue uunsual snow fall and consequent slush' throughout the month. Now that tho city assessor is about beginning the assessment of '87, would be a good time to begin talking about railroads again. A man whose lot is v orth only SG90 when assessed will ask $2,500 for it with railroad probabilities. Thus, likelihood of a railroad would tend to lower tho tax levy. It transpires that the British bark Vallejo, hence for Hull, September 9th, and previously referred to, ar rived off Dover this week, with her bows stove and her forward compart ment full of water, having been in .collision with the steamer Weather allx which sank, carrying down one of the crew. The ball given by the band last Tuesday evening was well attended, being socially and financially satis factory. The members deserve un limited success for their earnest ef forts, and havo attained a degree of proficiency that enables them to in vite comparison with any similar or ganization in tho state. A band tournament is to be held at Pendleton on the 23d, 24th and 25th of June next, to be open for all ama teur bands and band boys, whose av erage ages do not exceed 14 years and 6 months, in Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho. Each baud will play three selections. Premiums amount ing to $1,200 will be given. Tho repair force that went to Tilla mook rock was to return on the 19th, but the water in that vicinity has been too rough during the week to take them oil". When tho Oregon was off the rock yesterday morning the water was breaking half way over. However Capt. Gregory will go out with the Manzanita this morning and try to effect a landing. Alfred Zetterman, well known in these parts, is at present a door keep er in the house of the Lord, and ser-geant-at-arms for the salvation army at Portland. Last Thursday he got into trouble with three passersby, and, drawing a revolver, fired, ser- ionaly soaring those who were about ! to bo converted and oausingindefi- I nite postponment or their conversion. Governor Vena ev has appointed H. B. Compsou, ot Huutington, tu bo major general of thn state militia; J. M. Siglin, ct Marshiield, brigadier general, first .brigade; J. C. Shofnor. of Portland, brigadier gener.il second brigade; W. F. Matlock, brigadier general, third brigade; C. B. Golden, of Marshiield, health officer at C003 bay; T. C. Makey, of Gardner. hrn!th officer at the month of the Umpqua river. Indians who have arrived at Vic toria from the west coast of Van couver island report a large bark wrecked. Out of the crew of twenty, twelve were drowned. The remain der are among the Indians. The vessel's name is unknown. A steamer will likely be sent to their relief. The lighthouse keeper at Cape Beale reports large quantities of new planks floating in the straits, branded "P. L. Co." The following New York special appears in the St. Paul Pioneer Press under the date of Febrnary 17th: 'At a meeting of the directors of the Northern Pacific railroad com pany to-day, the establishment of a line of steamships between Tacoma and Alaska was confirmed. Tho line will be opened in April and con tinued through tho season to Octo ber. The steamer Olympian has aireauy reen cnartereci for the wr- vice. Tho Arlington Times is responsible for the follewing: " 'Rotten,' said a gentleman who visited the Oregon legislature for tho first time a few weeks ago. 'Do you ask a man what his price is, or how do you approach a memoerr '(jrenerallvy said a pro fessional lobbyist, 'we approach his legislative uib3 by proposing a trade of some kind; ofl'er him a little boot if required; and if he'll eat oysters with Joe Simon in the small hours of the next morning he's your meat.' ' e There was a horse race at ,T. P. Austin's at the Seaside last Tuesday afternoon between C. A. McGuiro's baldfaced horse Bock Creek Baldy, and N. A. Eberman's horse Clatsop Billy. The race was a distance of 120 yards, for 100 a side and was won by Baldy, by about a foot. Will Bussel rode Baldy and Geo. Eber man rode Billy. There was some coin on the outside changed- hands on the result. Clatsop Billy's owner announces that he oan beat Baldy on the same track for coin. Tho British ship liallofhhiyle cleared yesterday for Liverpool with a sample cargo of north Pacific pro ducts. She take3 16,491 barrels Ore gon flour to feed tho far off English artisans; 10,116 bus. wheat, enough for a breakfast for London; 28 pkgs. elk horns to adorn the stately halls of England, and 5,499 cases Columbia river salmon for English lunch tables. If the Ballochmyle but had a few 200 feet pieces of timber she would have a representative of each of oar principal products. The cargo is valued at $97,643. Ten days ago says the Yakima Signal, the snow on the summit of the Cascades wa3 21 feet in depth. It is now reduced to abont 13 feet. Fears are expressed of a warm rain or chinook wind, and if either comes great damage will bo dono to tho N. P. grade, especially on the we3t side. Not only the cuts and fills will suffer but tho roadbed throughout will bo injured to the extent of thousands of dollars. Necessarily with tho rapid pushing of fheJS work, frosted ground and bits of snow were builded into the grade, and should a freshet come it would melt away." The steamer Alki sank last Mon day morning says, the Pugti Sound Mail, while moored to the dock at Utsalady. During tho heavy west wind one of her water compartments gave way, allowing her to shift to one side, and in the lack of sufficient ballast she turned over. Capt. Mo Call with his wife and -crow had a narrow escape from drowning. They were in bed when they received the first signal of danger, and rushing out, they reached the deck just as the steamer sank. The captain lo3t a considerable amount of cash gold pieces were afterwards picked up on the beach, having washed up from the wreck. Tho total loss is esti mated at about $2,500. Some of the machinery can bo recovered. Expressions of dissatisfaoton are already being heard everywhere in this city says the Portland Telegram, at the passage of tho interstate com merce bill, which precludes railroad corporations from issuing passes to any persons not in the employ of said corporations. The number of people in this city who have been ac customed to ride on railroads with out "putting up" is not a small one, and from them comes tho loudest clamor. However, there aro others who also kick it's the class that is always living in expectation of being favored by a railroad company with a gratuitous ride. While in tho ma jority of such class their great expec tations are never realized, yet they kick at being deprived of their hopes. In the meanwhile the managers of railroads are laughing in their sleeves, and while they may not carry as many passengers in the courso of a month, their cash receipts will be somewhat increased. The Vancouver Independent is moved to remark as follews: "Many things happen here which this paper does not put before the public. 'Keep it out of tho paper,'.is the request the local newspaper man receives almost every day. To oblige often costs con siderable, though the party making the request often thinks it hardly worth a 'thank you.' The subscrib ers always expect the news and al ways wonder when for sweet charity's sake, an item on the street and in eevrybody's mouth is not found in the next issue of the paper. The edi tor who honestly works for the good of hia town will, as far as possible, suppress all items that will derogate from the interest and good will of his town; but he very rarely gets credit for this. A failure to note somo scandal or row is often attrib uted to fear or favor rather than tho true reason a desire to proteot and perpetnato the fair name of the town." Free Trade. The reduction of internal revenue and the taking off revenue stamps from Proprietary Medicines, no doubt ha3 largely benefited tho con sumers, as well as relieving tho bur den cf homo manufacturers. Especial ly is this the case with Green's August Flower and BoscJiec's Ger man Syrup, as the reduction of thirty-six cents per dozen, has been added to increase the size of the bot tles containing these remedies, there by giving one-fifth more medicine in the 75 cent size. The August Flower for Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint, and the German Syrup for Cough and Lung troubles, have perhaps, the largest sale of any medicines in the world. The advantage of in creased size of the bottles will be greatly appreciated by the sick and afflicted, in every town and village in civilized countries. Sample bottles for 10 cents remain the same size. And Now He Will Always Believe It. Broadway, in tho vicinity of the Morton House, presents a strange ap pearance these days. Buffalo Bill's scouts and Indians, and the inhabit ants of tho Aztec village, all of whom are appearing in JNew lork at pres ent, flock down to the Morton House to meet their fellow professionals, and it is no uncommon thing to see a hundred and fifty or two hundred men clothed in buckskins, serapes and sombreros, and armed with every thing from bows and arrows to Colt's 42-calibre revolvers, parading up and down tho street over a distance of a mile or so. One night, a short time ago. Lord Kinwaddie, the eldest son of the Earl of Buccleuch, arrived in New York, direct from England, and pnt up at tho Union Square hotel. It was his intention to write a book on America, refuting all the errors which his countr3rmen, who had done likewise, had made, and which, ho was told, did a rank injustice to the coun try. He had never been here be fore, and his time was limited, but ho intended to correot the groES ig norance of his conntrymeu regarding tho lawlessness of America. He awoke at ten the next morning, and, after partaking of breakfast, he strolled out on the street. The first sight that met his astonished British gaze was a strapping sunburned acout known as tho "Bad Man from Bodie," who nlavs the licrht comedv roles in Buffalo Bill's play. The Bad Man had a Henry reneatincr rifle on his shoulder, and a huge bowie knife protruding from his boot. Whlls his lordship was casoincr with astonish ment at the apparition, a troupe of naif naked Aztec Indians in war paint came iralloninir down the street. whoODincr for all thev wsre rrnrHi. Looking still further, he beheld long vistas ot armed, men in all manner of barbano costumes, until his brain reeled, and he staggered into the hotel in a fainting condition. An hour later, his valet took the" following cablegram to the effice: "To Buc cleuch, Londen: All that has been said about America is true. Will re turn at once. Kinwaddie." Neiv York Letter. A procession filed down Chenamus, up Cass and down Squeraoqua to the jail, about half-past ten last night. In front was borne two opium lay outs, four lighted lamp3, trays, shells with cooked opium.tins with uncooked opium, needles, knives, pipes and all tho paraphernalia. Officer Lin ville was chief marshal, Officer Cor bettrwas a little in the roar. Between the two marched seven Chinaman ar rested for smoking opium. Behind them came about forty lookers on. Tho Chinamen were takon to jail, searched and locked up. One, an expert, was called upon to show how the opium was prepared, and willingly complied. He mixed up a pipe in "short order and having cooked and placed tho opium in tho bowl, drew half a dozen whifis through the big bamboo stem and retired to a dream of bliss. Greatly Excited. Colonel Bobertson again appeared at tho door of the state senate this morning, but was refused admittance by the as sistant doorkeeper, by order of the Democratic majority, whereupon he retired. The Bepublican senators statod it to be their intention to take no part in tho proceedings, and would rest content with simply ignoring the actions of the Democratic majority and president pro tem Smith. A resolution was offered by Bailey this morning asking the state supreme court to act as arbitrator between the claims of Colonel Bobertson and Green Smith, but the Bepublicans say they have nothing to submit to the supromo court, which will not be likely to take any official notice of the matter. A BALTIMORE TIKE. Baltimore, Feb. 25. A six-story warehouse and candy manufactory wa3 burned this morning. Twenty minutes after the start of the fire the outer walls fell in. A four-story building in the rear of the warehouse was destroyed. Tho I033 on the buildings and stock aggregates two hundred thousand dollars, which is nearly covered by insurance. It i3 the opinion of Stanley that the government of Portugal is acting high handed, relyiug on the probable interference of Germany and tho passivenesa of England. Stanley in reference to the expedi tion for the relief of Emin Bey says that the party which has e.nbarked on tho expedition consists of niue European officers and sixty-one Soudanese, thirty Somalia and six hundred aud tweuty natives. They were joined at Zanzibar by three in terpreters, some Arab traders and forty of tho followers. DEATH" OF ARCUB1SUOP RLANCIIET. Vancouver, W. T., Feb. 25. Las been afilicied with Eczf ma of tho scaip, and at tiniM a groat portion of tho body, ever since he was two years old. It bejtan in hip ears, and extended to his scalp, which be came covered with scabs and sores, and from which a sticky fluid poured out, caus ing intense itching aud distress, and leaving his hair matted and lifeless. Underneath the-o scabs the&kin was raw, like a piece of beefstea-i. GraduaPy the hair came out and a destroyed, until but a small patch was left at the back of the head. Sly friends in i'eabody know how my little boy has suf fered. At night he would scratch his head uniu nis puiow was covereu witn oioou. 1 used to tie his hands behind him, and in many ways tried to prevent his scratching ; but it was no use, he would scratch. I took him to the hospital and to the best physi cians in Feabody without success. About this time, some friends, who hacFbeen cured by the Ccticcra "Remedies., prevailed up on me to try them. I began to use them on the 13th of Januarv last. In seven months every particle of the disease was removed. Not a spot or a scab remains on his scalp to tell the story of his suffering. His hair has returned, and is thick and strong, and his scalp as sweet and cleau as any .child's in the world, I cannot say enough to express my gratitude for this wonderful cure by the Cuticura Kkmedies, and wish all similar ly afflicted to know that my statement is true and without exaggeration, CHARLES McKAY. It Is the mucous membrane, that wonder ful semi-fluid em elope surrounding the deli cate tissues of the air and rood passages, that Catarrh makes its stronghold. Once es tablished, it eats into the very vitals, and renders life but a long-drawn breath or mis ery and disease, dulling tho sense of hear ing, trammelling the power of speech, de stroying the faculty of smell, tamtlug tho breath, and killing the rciiued pleasHres of taste. Insidiously, by creeping on from a simple cold in the head, it assaults the mem branous lining and envelopes the bones, eat ing through the delicate coats and causing inflammation, sloughing and death. Noth ing shoit of total eradication will secure health to the patient, and all alleviatlves are simply procrastinated sufferings, leading to a fatal termination, Saxfoud's Radical Cure, by Inhalation and bv Internal ad ministration, lias never failed ; even when the disease has made frightful inroads on delicate constitutions, hearing, smell and t:iste have been recovered, and the disease thoroughly driven out."
