Cz - .-,- Mt g& gfotfat. ASTOKIA. OREGON: TUESDAY JANUARY 11, 1887 Neably 400,000 immigrants came to the Gnited States last year. We will probably hear a little something about "swamp lands" now. The subject is one of con siderable interest to a good many in this countyy . The French" are sdd to be much hurt at' the -signs that both Bel gium and -Switzerland are prepar ing for &, neutrality which would give all advantages to Germany in the event of war. The total value of the exports of merchandise from the United States for the twelve months ended November" 30, 1886, were $705, 320,237 same period in 1885, $702,190,540. The imports for the same period in 1886 were val ued at $577,828,146; for 1885, $659,3'f8,637. The Manama Canal company having advertised for 300 laborers in the Bahama Islands to go to the Isthmus, the governor of the Bahamas has issued a "government notice" warning the people of the deadly climate and the insecurity of life and property on the Isth mus. Whatever may be said of his judgement, Henry George is evi dently a zealous man. He has started a daily paper and bids de fiance to the Pope all in a month. His next move will probably be to head the revolt against Powderly, thus exemplifying "progress and poverty." The total number of people in twenty-one counties in Texas now in need of food, clothing and fuel is placed at 30,000, while thou sands more are without seed to plant during the coming year. An appeal is made to the state and national legislatures and the coun try at large to furnish at once $500,000 to relieve their immedi ate wants. There are in the neighborhood of 130 foreign iron steamships run ning between the United States and various ports of Europe. Some of these cost not more than $250,000 and others cost as much as $1,500,000 each, so that a rough estimate would put the capital in vested at not less then $100,000, 000. On these vessels there are not less than 25,000 officers and men constantly employed. It seems little matter what a man says now-a-days, so'he says it well. At a New England din ner recently, a southern editor named Grady, made a speech that, it is said, will go far toward giving him the vice-presidential place on the next Democratic national tick et. It was a beautiful speech, full of noble sentiment and touching pathos, and was enthusiastically applauded. The only thing the speech lacked was truth. A disinterested leading En glish journalist just returned to London from a tour in Ireland, states that over wide areas in the "west and south he found the pop ulation undergoing incredible pri vation. Thousands of men, wom en and children in the remoter .districts, destitute of money, food and clothing, were sunk in the deepest misery and dying of star vation. The authorities are unable to cope with such wide-spread suffering and are -without money or supplies for the famishing. Ottawa is the center of the Ca nadian lumber industry. More lumber was sold and exported from Ottawa to the United States during the first quarter of the last year than ever before during the same period in its history. The cut this season will be fully up to if not in excess of the aver age. The total amount of lumber manufactured by the Ottawa mills during the past season is placed at "288,000,000 feet. The principal destinations of the consignments sent from Ottawa to the United States were Burlington, Albany, New York and Boston. A large proportion, however, of the lumber sent to the United States has been exported from thence to South America, the West Indies and Africa. The square timber trade which at one time was so largely carried on along the tributaries of the Ottawa river, has been almoBt entirely abandoned, nothing hav ing been done in that way during the past year.v During all the fishery roubles of the past season the Dominion cruisers seized only two American vessels on the score of attempts to exercise alleged prohibited com mercial privileges. While for bearance was due in part to the lack of statutory authority, it gave rise, in connection with some oth er facts, to the supposition that the British government would not countenance a course of action by one of its colonies so contrary to the national policy of complete freedom of trade. The Canadian parliament, however, at the last session passed a law to authorize the confiscation of foreign vessels entering Canadian "waters ''for any purpose not permitted by treaty of convention," or, in other words, (as the Dominion government con strues the convention "of 1818), of American vessels entering to buy bait or supplies. This enactment has been reluctantly approved by the imperial government, in order to prevent a storm in Canada. The upshot of it will be seizures of American fishermen next summer, not . merely for infraction of the Dominion customs laws, but for getting within three miles of land for any purpose except to obtain shelter, wood or water, or to repair damages.
