O:? 3fc gaity j$toriim. ASTORIA. OREGON: THURSDAY JANUARY C, 1837 "AS FOR SILVER." The Hankers 3Iagazine, in an article on our "Next Congress," says: "As for silver, while this will doubtless provea subject for continual discussion, we question if anything is done, unless it be a law for the suspension of silver coinage at some considerable dis tance in the future one, two, three, four or five years, or when a certain amount is reached. Pos sibly a compromise between the two parties may be made on such a basis. Otherwise nothing is likely to be done." This, says an exchange, is all this foremost leader (?) of financial wisdom has to say on the silver question, and of the duty of the present congress in dealing with it. It is astounding that a journal of the standing of the Bankers Magazine, could, in the face of the present facts in favor of bi metallism, utter such inane senti ments. It simply shows a total lack of comprehension of the sub ject. "We should like to ask this An cient, what would have been the condition of the circulating medi um, and consequently of the busi ness of the country to-day, if we had not coined the 247,000,000 in silver dollars that are now in circulation? We should have had not one dollar more gold in the country than we now have and, therefore, we should have had 247,000,000 less money in cir culation tnan we now have, unless the greenback or national bank cir culation had been increased by that sum. Does this Ancient advise contracting the money volume $247,000,000, or any other sum, in order to increase the prosperity of the nation? It is a fact patent to every business man that our money volume is not large enough now, even could we keep it at $25 per capita, which we cannot, unless we coin silver dollars twice as fast as we are now. The national banks have contracted their circulating notes $65,000,000 during the pres ent year. The greenbacks are a fixed quantity and by law are neither diminished or increased. "We are coining silver at the rate j of $25,000,000, and about as much more in gold. But the amount of gold and silver coined is not equal to the amount of bank notes de stroyed. Here then we have a contraction of the money volume going on every day, in the face of an increasing demand. The na tional banks have yet $69,000,000 in 3 per cent, bonds deposited as security for their circulation and these will be called in and can celled during the coming year, so that the contraction of currency from this source js to continue. But this is not all. Our popula tion is increasing at the rate of 3,000,000 a year, and in order to provide $25 per capita for such increased population we need to add $75,000,000 to our money vol ume each year. In the face of such facts what is to be thonght of the financial wisdom (?) that woul d recommend the stoppage of our silver coinage? There are forty-eight tramps on strike in the workhouse at Lan caster, Penn. They refuse to re turn to work until the authorities give them roast beef, vegetable soup, and a plenty of chewing and smoking tobacco. NEW TO-DAY. Steam Launch For Sale. Office Depot Quartermaster.
