Logan's Puneral A London Spec ulum, Etc. Poktland, Or., Dec. 31. The charges made against the Rev. Dr. "W. N. Mullenaux, pastor of the Taylor street M. E. Church in this city, have caused a great sensation here, and it is generally admitted have more or less truth inthem. A prominent Methodist minister said that he must meet the charges here and not in Ohio where he came from. The water committee had a meeting this afternoon and opened thPt hid?? for the citv bonds. The Portland water company bid for one hundred and thirty thousand dollars. W. S. Ladd, agent, for two hundred thousand; the First National Bank for one hundred and seventy thousand. The pre mium bid was G and Sf-; average premium 7.86. AN APPARENT FRAUD. New York, Dec. 31. The Tribune's London special says: The connection between the so called American exhibition adver tised to be held in London next year, and President Cleveland, is again a matter of comment here. The promoters of the speculation trumpeted Cleveland's acceptance of the post of honorary vice pres ident, which somehow became transferred into honorary presi dent, but they did not think it worth while to give any undue notoriety to his withdrawal. The facts are that Cleveland was in duced to accept the post by two -representations, both false. He was told that this exhibition was purely American in origin and character, whereas it is a specula tion and English in its origin for which English money was found. He was told that the Prince of Wales had consented to accept a post similar to that offered to Cleveland, such post had been pressed upon the Prinee who re fused to have anything to do with the concern. These misrepresen tations were brought to President Cleveland's notice, and he was fur ther warned that his name was being used in order to induce En glish and Americans to believe that the American government had some official connection with the enterprise. The president thereupon withdrew his name. Notice of his withdrawal was given to the highest authorities connect ed with the exhibition. This was done last August, but Cleveland's name is still used. OUR DEFKNCELESS COASTS. New Yoel, Dec. 31. Calling attention to the fact that twelve eighty-ton guns are now on the way from England to Yictoria, B. C, the Herald says: If all the large guns possessed by this gov ernment were mounted in San Francisco they would not protect that city against even one of the twelve eighty-ton guns. THE LOGAN OBSEQUIES. Washington, D. C, Dec. 31. The sleet storm of last night thick ly enameled the pavement and gave place this morning to a heavy fog that was almost a rainfall, mak- two inches ot thawing snow md ice which covered the ground kand made marching and all oat- door exercises a thing to be dread ed. However great crowds made their way from early this morning toward the capitol to view the re mains of the dead statesman, John A. Logan, and the time of lying in state was too short to give an op portunity for all to pass by. At eleven o'clock the doors were closed to the general public while two ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic filed in on either side of the bier. The undertaker closed the lid of the casket. A belated delegation of friends from Chicago arrived five minutes later, and the casket was reopened to enable them to take a last look at the body. At ten minutes past twelve the poll bearers took their places and convoyed the casket to the senate chamber. The hall of the senate was taste fully, though not elaborately draped, and the chair of the dead senator, the second of the inner most row from the center aisle, was covered with crape. The clerk's desk was almost hidden in a bank of floral emblems, flanked on the right and left, respectively, by a huge anchor and an immense representation of the badge of the Fifteenth Army corps. Two or three hundred additional chairs had been arranged in rows for the accommodation of those who had been invited to do honor to the deceased. GOING TO PIECES. Chicago, Dec. 31. The Times says a formal announcement has been sent out by Commissioner Midgley of the Pacific Coast asso ciation, that on January 1st the organization will cease to ex ist. This action is piobably has tened by the fact that several roads have notified the commis sioner that they will no longer honor drafts for their share of ex penses. Pop.ti.and, Or., Dec. 31. To morrow "Wells Fargo's express wiil cease operations all along the O. R. & N. lines. The company has been losing twelye hundred dollars a month. a terrible accident.
