This paper yesterday made men tion, says the Tacoraa JVetcs, that on the morning of January 11th there would be a very high tide. One who is learned iti such mat ters to-day gave a jWeics reporter further knowledge regarding the causes which would bring about that result. There are, said he, six conditions which affect the hight of the tides. Once in a great while all of these are favorable, and the result is a tide of unusual hight. The earth musk be near the sun; the moon must be near the earth; the moon must be full and mutt run high. Then after tho moon has passed the south we will have a ver- high tide if the wind along this coast is not against the Japanese cur rent. If you look in the almanac you will see that the full moon will be south on January 9th at thirty seven minutes past ono o'clock in the morning. But the moon's in fluence is not felt on the earth for two days, and it takes five hours and twenty minutes for the wave to reach this port, so we must add these figures. It can be thus com puted that wo will have a high tide on January 11th at G:57 a. m. The other conditions will combine to make it unusually high. The earth is nearest the sun during January, and the moon will be nearest the earth on January 12th. The moon will be running highest (nearest tho zenith) on January 8tb, and the difference for the 11th will be too small to mention. If the winds on the ocean are north east the tide will be still higher. Look out for breakers on the 11th of next month. Jack Dempsey having been challenged by Dominick McCaffrey to fight to a finish for 2,000 a side, has replied from Salt Lake that he would fight Dominick for 5,000 or more, at San Francisco.
