Holden last Friday evening was as pleasant an affair of the kind as anything we ever attended. The rooms were filled with a merry crowd of ladies and gentlemen, who enjoyed themselves to the utmost. Though no formal invitations were issued, the house was filled; which, we think, speaks well for the social spirit of the phce. A pleasant, feature of tho evening's entertainment was the vocal music of Mrs. Page and the in strumental music furnished by Messrs. Mcintosh and Dunning and Miss Wil son. Notwithstanding there wore other social gathering at the same hour at other places in the oty, which took away the musical portion of the performance after the opening piece. Tho literary proceedings commenced with an essay on "Discipline in tho School Room" by Miss F. E. Brown, which, excellent in matter and deliv ered in tho fittest manner, eliciting the quick applause of tha audience. This was followed by an address on "Moral Instruction in the School Room," by J. F. Halloran. Professor L. J. Young and A. C. Lambsnear the mouth of Neha- letn river, on Friday, the 6th day of January. The facts, so far as known, are as fullnns: Mr. Thomas, living m Tillamook bty, having beeu quite unwell for some time past, and feeling tkat it was necessary to have a physi- cian, sent Mr. Lambo to procure the services of Dr. Young, who wasat that time teaching, school on the north side ,f Nehalem river, some four miles above the mouth. Mr. Lauibe started on Thursday, the 5th, and went as far as Hiatt & Richardson's plactf at the mouth ot Aelialeut, remaining over night, and Friday morning took a small cauoe. and started across the liver, J where Dr. Young was teach ing. L.ito Friday evening an Indian, (Nehalem John,) was passing up the river, and found the canoe that Mr. Lambe hid started in, capsized and blown ashore on the south side of Ne halem, something over a milt; from the niuuth. It is evident that Mr. Lombe was returning with Dr. Young across the Nehalem when they were drowned, as Dr. Young's hat was picked up by the writer Saturday morning, the 7th, on the ocean beach at the mouth of the river, and on Sunday, the 8th, Messrs. Brown and Johnson found the doctor's saddle-bags, containing his medicines; they were picked up a aliert distance from the mouth, on the south bank of the liver. This Is all that is known at present concerning tho fate of these Unfortunate men, their bodies having not been found up to the date of writing. Dr. Young has not been long a resident of Tillamook county, and we suppose but little is known hero concerning his history; the writer has heard him speak of living in Cor vallis, Benton county, a year or so ago. Mr. Lambc has been living in Tilla mook county some five or six years; hp was formerly from Arkansas. Wm. C. HtWT.
