This time of year is typically the most productive. Recent rains and big tide should help to move new fish into the lakes. The West Lake Boat Ramp at Siltcoos has been close for repairs but there is a neighboring private ramp that can be utilized. Look to fish near the lake outlet and by the major tributaries that enter the lakes. Casting or trolling spinners or various plugs can be effective. Huff, a sophomore, contin- ued undefeated for the season at 9-0 in the 112-pound bracket after pinning all three of his opponents in Saturday’s meet — including a bittersweet win over team- mate Matthew Morales in the title round in 2 minutes, 44 seconds. Huff also had pins over Reedsport’s Fisher Wahl (1:54) and Tyler Huerta of Myrtle Point (3:43). At 160 pounds, senior wrestler Tupua faced Coquille’s Wyatt McCarthy in the title match, where he outscored McCarthy 3-2 for the title. Earlier in the day, Tupua pinned Sutherlin’s Connor Grauf in 3:12 in the quarterfinals, and won by an 8-6 decision in the semifinals See Mapleton junior Tyler Packebush reacts to a sudden full-court press by the Pirates. For Mapleton and it’s eight- to nine- player line-up, the inability to sub players eventually takes its toll. On Friday, the Pirates were able to take advantage of that to break away for sizeable leads in the second and fourth quarters. For the Mapleton girls, while hold- ing the Pirates to an average of just 10 points per quarter, they struggled offensively against Pacific’s ability to swing between full-court man-to-man and half-court trap. By the start of the fourth quarter, the Sailors were trailing 9-38 before going on an 11-point run sparked by a jumper from 5-foot-8 Mapleton freshman Gabrielle Gibney finds an opening for a pass against Pacific’s zone defense. P IRATES post Alyssa Richards. The freshman went on to score five more points on a pair of buckets and a free throw, along with a steal and fast- break layup from senior guard Hannah Rodet, who also scored the last basket of the game for a final score of 52-20 in favor of the Pirates. In the boys’ game, the opening min- utes remained close after a basket for Pacific was matched by an offensive rebound from 6-foot-5 sophomore post Dominic Wells. Both teams spent the next few minutes scoreless until, with four minutes left, the Pirates went on an 8-0 run that was ended by a jumper from Mapleton junior Tyler Packebush. Pacific extended its lead with a pair of free throws, but sophomore Gene Carnes drilled a 3-pointer to put the Sailors within seven.
