SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 2015 Seafood one else because I’m not buy- ing our fish from anyone else.” In addition to the fresh salmon and tuna, the market has a large recirculation water tank filled with lively Dungeness crab. A cautionary sign next to the tank reads, “Do not put hand in water.” Whole fresh cooked crab is from 1A People have been lining up on the dock waiting for the market to open since its first day of operation on June 27. “We are trying to get rid of the middleman,” Amber said. “My prices are lower than any- also available for purchase. Fishermen have sold their catches directly off the boat in Florence for years. But there are state restrictions that only allow them to sell whole fish. “There are a lot of people that can’t afford, or don’t want a whole salmon or tuna,” Amber explained. “It is a lot easier for the average con- sumer to come in here and just buy a fillet or loin of fish. They can pick their size.” The Novellis have been commercial fishing out of Newport for five years. Kyle Novelli skippers the fishing vessel Midnight, a 37-foot wooden troller, built in 1947, Do You Need More Money for Retirement? Since 1865 In today’s economic environment, consider the benefits of a charitable gift annuity with The Salvation Army. Lock in a secure stream of income with one of America’s most trusted charities. My husband is a contrac- tor and carpenter and he remodeled the inside. Now we absolutely love our boat, and it fishes like a champ.” The Novellis also have a crabbing boat, the Aquarius. Bob Selkregg opened the original Fisherman’s Choice Market in 2011 but unexpect- edly closed the business last summer. The Novellis believe that by cutting out the added cost of the middleman fish buyer, they will be able to suc- ceed. The Novellis purchased the building and interior fur- nishings from Selkregg, but must still pay for moorage and other services from the Port of Siuslaw. “They are working really well with me right now,” 11 A Amber said. “They have been helping us out a lot, trying to make sure that we are success- ful. They want to see how well we are doing and figure out what they are going to charge us.” Another dilemma Amber is trying to work out is when to take a day off. “The hard thing is leaving if I have fresh fish in the shop. I’m not going to leave if I have something fresh to sell. Right now, I’m running low on salmon and my husband is out tuna fishing, so if I sell out of the salmon today, I’ll be closed tomorrow. “I need to take one day off a week so I can get some ‘mom’ things done at home, like laun- dry and grocery shopping.” Novelli’s Crab and Seafood market is open weekdays from about 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 541-639-7689.
