School Hygiene. Continued from pp ) j H chip ozonation with tuberculosis fel low pupils or possibly the teacher. Amonc the fruitful tourers of danger is the common thinking cup, which must he abolished for the individual folding cup or the hygienic drinking fountain where no cup is needed. Religions or ganizatiocs have lound that the microbe has no respect for the holy communion cup, sci they row use the individual cups. AVhy not take similar steps to protect the children who d'fnk many times each day from the cup used alike by Unheal thy and the diseased? The following rules for the prevention of tuberculosis ehou'd be posted in every school room : (1) Po not spit on slate, floor, sidewalk or playground; (2) do not spit except in spittoon, a piece of cloth or handkerchief. On returning from school the cloth may be burned or the handkerchief put in water until such time as it can be washed. (3) Do not put pencils, your fingers, pins, or ii fact anything else, in your mouth, except food or drink ; (4 protect the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing; (5) peel or wash truit before eating it; ( ) do not kiss any one on the mouth or 1 low them to do so to you ; (7) learn to love fresh air, breathe deeply and prac tice it often. In France the covers of the bocks are utilized to teach the children how to pre vent tuberculosis. Teachers should be impressed w;th the fact that tubeiculosis has killed many times more people thhii have rll the wars since the world began. If the leacher is convinced rf thedanger he or she will in turn convince the pupil and a great step will have been taken m the right direction. Unfortunately tie medical profession has taken little inter est in this question until recently. Now nearly all the large cities haue medical inspectors for the schools. To the cred it of the superintendents and teachers be it said tbat tbe medical inspector has received their hearty approbation and support. WehareBtock inspectors, why not inspectors for boys and girls? Is not tuberculosis among the children as im portant as scab among the sheep? If it pays to spend state money to eradicate diseases of animals would it not be a good investment to prevent human dis eases? Typhoid fever, tuberculosis and many other diseases are preventable, yet tiiis state furnishes several hundred victims annually, causing great loss of life an J property. Toe general public should come to re aliz9 that public health service is second to none in importance to the community and tii e state. Physicians have ever been foremost in the work of preventing disease. The next few years wili eee rapid strides made in the direction of preventive medicine. Already many or ganizations have beea formed with that end in view and steps have been taken 1 joking to the formation of a national buret u of hebhh. When that is done all the people in the nation will be united uader one flag, to go forth to fight and vanqui'h the invisible common foe, tbe microbe.
