NET-FISHING IN THE LAKES. How the Frenh Water Fish Are Cap tured for the Market of the Country. Practically all commercial fishing' in fresh waters is carried on by the use of nets, whether a rowboat or an up-to-date tug is employed. The gill net is the handiest and is much used in Lake Erie. This forms a fence on the bottom of the kike about sixTict high and any where from fcOO feet to several miles long-. These nt'ts are made of thin cord and can be stowed ;;v.ny in a very sinniL compass, says the Buffalo Express. A fish will swimagain.st the fence of net ting, get its head cqusrht in the nii'sli, aud will stay there until taken out by the fishermen. Tlie nets are hept in position in the water by lead sinkers on the bottom and cork bobs on top. The ent ire net is also anchored secure ly, while the spot is marked by a buoy, dill nets often come in sections 300 feet long-, and are fastened together in jranjrs. Fishing tugs often set a gang that is over f our miles long. Each boa t is equipped with two gangs. Pound nets, whose use in New York waters is prohibited, are used in Ohio and Canadian waters. They form large receptacles in the water into which fish find their way and are prevented from getting out by a trap-like ar rangement at the entrance. Game fish are often caught in pound nets. Then th'ere are also smaller trap nets, fyke nets, and many other varieties, some of which are peculiar to different lo calities. Some commercial fishing- is carried on by the use of set lines for sturg-eons, etc., but such means are not exten sively employed. MEXICO MAKING STRIDES. Our Son t li weMern Neighbor la nap icily TaklnK On the I!rlkuta of America. Dr. Charles Amezcua, of the City of Mexico, who is a gentleman of scien tific attainments, told a Washington reporter how much impressed he was with the beauty of Washington and with the surpassing- beauty of its au tumnal days. "There is one tiling," said he, "that probably a great many of your renders do not know, and that is how rapidly the republic of Mexico is becoming Americanized. Our people know of the tremendous progress of our great sis ter across the Kio Grande, and while they realize that there is yet an enor mous gulf that separates the one from the other, still the United States is an inspiration and an incentive. We re joice in seeing the United States take precedence of the old-world monarch ies, and do not doubt it will eclipse tli em all. "With such an object lesson before us it is no wonder that Mexico is like wise making rapid strides along the road that leads to nal iona 1 "Ten t ness. The country is aw ake, -u ide aw ake, and everybody seem; imbued with the idea of a glorious destiny. We are praying, also, that Gen. Diaz may have his life prolonged for at least ten more years, because lie is really the one great fac tor in our advancement, and as long as he lives no one fears but that all will go well with our country." HE HAD A NARROW ESCAPE. IJoctor, nut Mot tl Kind to Which Ilia LivmI On Objected. "I have always insisted, " ehe said, after a long, sweet silence, "that 1 would never marry a doctor or a preacher." lie turned pale and a look of despair crept into his eyes, relates the Chicago liecord-Herald. "Arthur" she exclaimed, "what is the matter?" With a heaving sigh he answered: "( a n't I induce you to overcome vour prejudice V Ah. tell me, tell me "that your decision jigninst doctors and preachers is not irrevocable." Six weeks before slie had written a message on an t g and s-nt it out into the world. She looked up into his eyes with a wild yearning and cried: "Are you a preacher?" "No." he groaned, "not that not that." "Oh, tell e, tell me," she -wailed "that yo'i j;rc not a doctor." He hung iiis head. There -wm e guilty look i:i his eycs and she kne- that the worst had come. At last, p oiling himKeIf together with a mighty effort, he turned to her and said: "Yes, Emeline. You have guessed the truth. I am a doctor. Hut why should that matter? Why do you dis criminate against preacher and doc tors?" "Hecause they hare to be amonff women so much," she sadly replied. "I should want my husband all to mr- self.' "Love," be happy. he cried, "then we may still I am a horse doctor."
