The report gives detailed fijj. ares on the asets and liabilities of the Panama Company. Summing up these items, the total valneof jroprty is found to be: Ex- civation done, $.7,474,033; Panama railroad stock at par, $6,886,300; maps, Irawinps and records, $2,000,000; total, $:(6,SoO,333. The last item is intended to cover any buildings, tnai-binerv, railr'-ad stations, additional excavation to date of pur chase, and other asaets which may be of TaUie to the United States and not included in the other items. The estimates of the construction of the Nicaragua canal is $45,630,704 more than the cost of conip'eting the Panama canal. The estimated coat of maintain ing and operation is $1 .;5oO,OuO greater tt Nicaragua than at l'anama. The Manama route would lie 134 0 miles xhoiter than the Nicaragua route from -ea to sea, with fewer locks and !es curvature. The estimated time for a deep draft vessel to pass through the Nicaragua canal was placed at 33 hours, 4 atrainxt J? hours fr 1'anania. If the Nicaragua, $J99,8'i4,06i' ; Panama, I . 1 $I4,33,30H. The question whe'her the new Pan ama ( anal Company can make to the purchaser a ralid tit'e to the properly formerly belonging to the old company, its predecessor, ie considered at length. The repori concludes as follows : "After considering the changed con ditions that now exist, and that all the facts and circumstances upon which its present judgment most be based, the commission is of the opinion that the most practical and feasible route for the Isthmian Canal to be under the control management and ownership of the United states is that known as the Panama route." The report is signed by the entire commission. The state department will now pro ceed t arrange a protocol with Dr. Hilva. engaging Colombia to approve the transfer of the franchise of the Pan ama Company, and to make any desir able extensions of time allowance for the completion of the canal and in the life of the lease. jicscurrriyptcE Makes the food mere detkknts and wholesome A Vigorous Policy.
