Echo, Ore., May 4. The Umatilla river is higher at this point than It has been at any time this year. Little damage hu resulted, only a few early gardens having been washed out. 'The Tour Around the World" en tertainment given by the Epworth League Friday night was quite suc cessful and received the hearty pat ronage of the Echo people. The re ceipts of the evening were over $30. Messrs Stanfield. Thomson, Watten burger and tlaars kindly gave thei automobiles and time to conveying the patrons from the church to the resi dences which represented the cities. W. II. Babb, who recently died at Medicine Hat, Alberta, was a pioneer of this section and lived here for many years. He was a member of Umatilla Lodge No. 40, A. F. & A. M. of Echo and remained a member un til the time of his death. The lodge wired suitable tributes. Miss Maggie Stoekda'e has gone to Irrigon. where she expects to spene" the summer. Knight, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Knight, accompanied by his wife and little daughter, arrived In Pendleton yesterday from San An tonio, Texas, and will take up their residence here or In Portland. Phelps this morning granted a divorce to John Gaynor from his wife, Carrie Gaynor, on the grounds of desertion. Gaynor is a resident of Freewater and was represented in his suit by Attorney Jas. P. Bids for 52 blocks of street pavement, at an aggregate cost of ISO, 000, were op ened at GoldendaU this week 'by the council. Eleven bids were received, covering 25 different kinds of street pavement, ranging in cost from 70 cents a Muar ward for water bound macadam to $2.07 a sijuare yard for hard surface pavement. Bids were re ceived from two contractors for the Dolarway concrete base patent pave ment, the lowest at J 1.34 a square yard. Mayor X. L. Ward told the con tractors present that the bids selected by the council would be announced within one week. The Dolurway company Is asking a price of J 1.50 per square yard for paving West Court street with their pavement, or a price 16 cents higher than is asked at Goldendale, is the re port Is correct.
