UP mis SEASON STOCK VKKY SHOUT IX CALIFORNIA SECTIONS AtUnit to Lower Prices Mccta With Little SiioeeM I log .Market Ad vumv Sheep Stationary Wlieitt In Bullish. (From Friday's Journal.) That there will be no cheap prices in the cattle market here during the coming eason is the opinion of A. F. Hunt, the well known stockman aw' member of the local livestock com mission firm of Hunt & Lacey. Mr. Hunt has Jusrt returned from an extensive Investigating tour of Cali fornia and finds stocks there very short and the demand bo good that prices are out of line with conditions here. "From Merced this way, I found a shortage of beef cattle," said Mr. Hunt. "I would estimate the shortage at close to 25 per cent on account of the extreme dry weather there earlier In the season. "The season Is from three weeks to a month late and initial shipments of grass stuff will start from there about May 20. The market In the south is unusually strong, and because some of the San Francisco parties thought that I was going to grab everything In sight they began to buy right and left. Los Angeles has been the prin cipal buyer there and the price in ef fect is so much higher than the out look here that none of the stuff wil come In this direction unless our views show a big change." 'This is the first season for some time'that Mr. Hunt did not purchase quite liberally in California. I'tah' (.'utile, Contracted. Most of the cattle that arrived at North Portland during the past 24 hours were contracted prior to ar rival by a local' meat company and theefore did not enter the general trade. No prices on this lot were made public by either buyer or seller. While in some, instances efforts were made to depress cattle values owing to the liberal purchases in Utah by a local firm, which Is at present about the only buyer here, the general situation is practically cattle unchanged.
