Fort Gcorgo and its surrounding trrritorv offer to the right man better chances than can bo found anywhere else on tho continent. The country j young and exceedingly wealthy in products of forest, field and mine. Fort George Is rated by men of af fairs throughout America and Europe as one of the railroad centers or can nda. With a level townsito, admir ably located, best of water and splen did climate, It has, as tho central i.nlnt nf the Inland Empire of British Columbia, advantages enjoyed by but few other cities either In the east or west. The Grand Trunk l'aciuc nae ordered completion of Us main lino n this noint bv the fall of tins year 1912. By tho first of June freight should be coming over its rans via Edmonton to Ute Jaune Cache, thence by river steamer to Fort George. The Edmonton Board of Trade Is working hard for this and states that the freight rate then will bo three cents per pound. Ten other railroads are. Chartered to this point and at least four of these are looked upon as certain to come In the near future. Chamber of Commerce Bldg, Pertland, Oregon, W. A. Seate, Mgr. If you were making a reconnais sance of a large area "f greatly di versified country and were taking copious notes of the various natural characteristics observed as well as the many works of man. your notes would consist to a large extent of discussions of constantly recurring types which might well be expressed by symbols. The printed or written sign language is far older than tho alphabet, and there Is In common use today In the Vnlted States an official sign lan guage which so far as geographic features are concerned is sufficient to describe fully, without the use of a single word, the most unusual area within the country or any of its out lying possessions. This is the rollec tinn of symbols and abbreviations adopted by the United States Geo graphical board and published, with their signification, on a large sheet by the United States Geological Sur vey. By the use of these symbols ev erything of the nature mentioned can be described by an amateur map maker, or can be read on any govern ment may, and anyone wwh has the key to the smybols can read tho map and learn the character of the area sn far as the map depicts It. Thus a rock In the ocean whose ex act position Is doubtful is represented by a simple sign tho size of a pin head, and an oil well or a telegraph station is Indicated hy another sym bol no larger. If a lake or pond Is Intermittently wet and dry it Is rep resented by a symbol differently from that used for a regular lake, and If a section of country Is covered with pines or other conifers the symbol employed to show these trees la slightly different from that used In Indicating an oak forest. Some 70 symbol are used to portray the va rious works and structures erected hy man, from suspension bridges to mine shafts or windmills; about 20 sym bols are used to indicate different classes of land, ranging from sugar cane areas to cactus patches; aids to navigation and hydrogrnphlc features of all kinds are represented by many devices, and other general subjects covered are boundaries, marks and monuments and many special military features. This sheet of conventional ?lgns Is much In use by schools and field or ganizations. It can he procured from the Director of the Geological Sur vey, Washington, D. C., for 10 cents or If purchased In lots of 60 or more for 6 cents which simply covers the cost of paper and printing. Induces Court to Exchange Their Sentences So Parent Can Be Set ITee Sooner. Baltimore, Md. Asking that a sen tence of three years In jail imposed upon his father be imposed upon him and that his own sentence of two years In jail be reversed to his father, Hugh C. Lyons broke down in the criminal court and wopt bitterly. Judge Elliott complied with the pris oner's unusual request and Lyons seemed much relieved when given the chance to exchange sentences with his father, giving the elder man the ben efit of one year. Though neither nf them ever has directly admitted that they were fath er and son, Hugh D. Lyons, alias Philip Tassavant and Hugh C. Lyons, who bear a very marked resemblance to each other, have given the author ities much difficulty In proving their relationship. They wero arrested some time ago by Detective Schanber ger and Kahler on a charge of ob taining money through bogus checks passed upon tobaccoists and confec tioners. Several days ago they were convicted. Touched by the loyalty of his part ner in crime, "Passavant" asked that the original sentence be adhered to, but Judge Elliott carried out the reversal. The foregoing dispatch, dated at Hobart, Tasmania, was received here today by the Reuter Agency and fur ther complicates the situation In the alleged successful dash of Captain Scott, the English explorer, to the South Pole. It is generally believed In London that Amundsen was responsible for the first dispatch, crediting Scott as the discoverer. In reply to a dispatch sent for fur ther details, a second dispatch was received stating that nothing had been heard from either Amundsen or Scott. Christlania, Norway, March 8.- Haakon today sent a cablegram to Captain Amundsen, congratulating him on his discovery of the South Pole and granting the successful ex plorer permission to use the names of himself and Queen Maud in connec tion with the new lands discovered. The nature of the land has not as yet been announced by Amundsen, but it has long been believed that it is rich in gold deposits and great Inter est is felt throughout Norway through this fact Today's session of parliament was devoted to glorifying the achievement of Amundsen In his discovery and congratulations were wired him.
