He stood upon the platform and he made a plea for peace; In saddened tones he wondered when the foolish wars would cease; He called the nations cruel that resorted still to force, Putting burdens on their peo ple, blocking arbitration's course. He pointed out the beauty of worldwide dasarmament; Not a war, he said, but reason and fair dealing might prevent; He called all fighting foolish and a criminal expense: Then he quarreled with his neighbor o'er a little old line fence. S. E. Klser. ply. It cost thousands of dollars to send out those letters and obviously that money was ustd to promote Mr. Selling's candidacy. That money should be reported along with other money expended for campaign pur poses. If it is not so reported It will be an evasion of the law and it should not be tolerated. The laws upon this subject were enacted to bar the use of money In , elections and to place rich men and I poor men upon the same -plane, as t they should be. But those laws will j bt farcical if they can be evaded I through the tactics adopted by Ben Selling. Here is a fine opportunity to test out the corrupt practices act to see " that law is a hoax or a measure that will truly enforce cleanliness in the political life of the state. DECEIVED. THEY MOVE VERY SLOWLY. Reactionaries are unduly afraid of the "passing whims" of the people They appear to think the people are easily jnoved to hasty action and so cannot be trusted. There Is no danger on this score. The people are not hasty enough. The people as a' whole are excessive ly slow and temperate minded. They tolerate injustices much longer than they should. History is full of illustrations showing that the greatest obstacle to progress has alway 'been the indif ference of those who would be most benefited by reform. People are too prone to be content and to let well enough alone. They are very patient and will seldom revolt no matter how badly they may be used. When the mob does rise it is not because It has been given power but because power has been too long de nied. It is when the natural outlets are all closed that the volcano break? forth. There would have been no French revolution if the peasantry could have advanced gradually. In America there is now great pro test against the control of affairs by the aristocracy of wealth. There has been too much for the rich and not enough for the poor. At Lawrence the rich people who have not worked hard have reaped profits by the mil lions. Poor people who have worked hard all the while get wages rang ing from J 6 to $10 per week sums upon which white people cannot live in decency. It won't suffice any longer to tell the people to work hard and to be frugal. The mill owners need that advice worse than do the workers. There is discontent in this country' because certain forces of wealth have co-operated with the politicians to prevent a proper and gradual ad justment of affairs. The people have lost confidence in professional or practical politicians and they are turn ing for support to the Initiative and referendum, the direct primary and the recall. Since the politicians wont rio what they should the people are going to act for themselves. It is very natural the people should take this course and those are unwise who oppose the move. They are ob jecting to the safety valve. "When the campaign following the primaries of February 20 was begun no practical politician would admit I that Cotterill had a chance to win," 1 says a story relating to the victory of the Seattle mayor-elect over Hi Gill. Ah! It Is too bad indeed that the practical politicians should have been so deceived. But it is not the first time they have missed their guess. Oregon politicians have met with sim ilar misfortunes WHY DCTT IX. From appearances government of ficials are taking the Mexican revo lution seriously. It is asserted that Uncle Sam must send an army into Mexico or else allow European coun tries to do so. But why such anxiety. No one has been killed yet and there are no reports of damage to American interests. Most of the activity has consisted in the sending forth of man elestos and they don't hurt people. The improvement of streets will al so help the Pendleton fire department. It is hard to drag hose cars through the mud. George S. Shepard will run for con gressman from Multnomah county this year. Lard-soaked food never has been, never can be digestible and nourishing, because of the hog fat it contains. Cottolene is far more healthful than lard because Cottokne is a vegetable product, makes food rich without being greasy, and can easily be digested by the stomach of a child. . They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. People who have used and are usmgCottoIene for all shortening and frying purposes say that the way to health is through theuse of Cottolene. Cottolene is the most economical shorten ing, because it goes one-third farther than butter or lard. Made only by THE N. K. A few days later I pho tographed a Turkish warship between the minarets of a mosque; I keep the picture as a symbol. "The Great Game" is more man a contending of nations for the control of the Bos phorus; it is a titanic struggle of tae two most vital religious creeds of earth for the possession, of the city that was once ancient Byzanthium; an! subse quently for the dominion of the world. The end seems clearly written. The crescent may not disappear from the horizon; but at least it will not al ways remain, on sword and flag,, as the emblem of an imperial govern ment, holding sway over the most his toric -and most sacred portions of the globe. Turkey will some day pass into the possession of the other na tions, and law, commerce, agriculture, safe communication will follow the flags of modern civilization where an archaic chaotic, grotesque religion-political empire has for centuries wie'd ed a deadening sway Humanity stands to win in the end of "the great game." Golden Rule Store "WE LEAD, OTHERS FOLLOW" The world may as well accept as the principal issue of "the great game that centers about Constantinople, the fact that the war begun twelve hun dred years ago by the dusky Arabian camel-driver is still on. , This Tur-co-Italian scrape is only one little skirmixh in it. Mohammed failed to make any progress with his creed un til he put the swor.l into the hands of his followers, and bad them smite. Sfwift and certain paradise was to be the reward of all who should fa!l in fighting the unbelievers. The surest way to win the caresses of the houris of his sensually-conceived heaven was to slay all who did not accept the Prophet. In that faith Islam made its first and greatest conquests. That faith the faithful still hold. They keep their hand in by occasional mas sacres of Christians, and meantime dream of the possibilities of a "holy war" which shall once more make Islam master of the whole earth. The Pan-Islamic movement, which Is a no table fact In the world today, is as turly a political maneuver as It is a religious propaganda. All over the world the followers of the Prophet hail the Sultan of Tur key as Caliph, as Commander of the Faithful, as the shadow of God upon earth, and as the successor of Mo hammed himself. This one fact alone accounts for the continuance of the Turkish , Empire. The beholder is utterly blind to the meaning of the "great game" in the hither east unless he perceives this first factor. The wild and warlike and ultra-orthodox Wahabls of the Nejd are kept in al liance with the religiously lax and enervated Turks only by the Islamic tie; the fierce' Kurds of the mountains of Asia Minor are brothers to the "Marsh Arabs" of the Tigris-Euphrates Valley only for the same rea son; the Bedouins of the Hejaz make common cause with the mysterious Henussl, who have been accumulat ing great stores of arms in the hinter land of Tripoli, and latterly in the Sudan, simply by reason of their one creed. Egyptian, Persian, Indian, Sudanese, all follow the green flag of the Prophet which is in the sultan's keeping; and that not by virtue of his sultanate, but of his caliphate. Not long since I was calling upon the handsome Turkish minister of war, Shevket Pasha. Suddenly an imaum, who was also a hadjl, sound ed in the lobby of the war office the muezzin, or call to prayer.
