"The rumor that Corvallls might be quarantined on ac count of small pox is nothing but re dleulous gossip," said Dr. H. S. Per mit, city health officer, this morning. "We have not had thirty cases all to gether, and they were carefully quar antined and every precaution taken against the spread of the disease. The main means of contagion was the city public schools, and since the vacci nation 'f the s '-n.l etillilron the dis ease has been well under control. ."At the college there have been lut five students affected by the dis ease, and they were quarantined at once in town, and their residence and class room thoroughly fumigated. that others might not be endangered.'' "People coming to the college for the short course will be running no more risk of exposure than they would if they stayed at home," said Dr. William T. Johnson of the Corvallis hospital. "There is no more smal pox here than in other towns in the valley; not so much, in fact, as in a number of others." The cases have been so exteremely light that for some time it was doubt ed whether it waa really small pox and not some lesser epidemic, as chickenpox.
