Whether Boone Watson has resigned or not there are some politicians who would like to see him resign or be ousted. Then they would like to have his post filled by a political worker from their own gang. All of this is wrong. It is not a political job at all and should not be made one. If the game warden and the fish and game commission do right they will not give the post to a political worker of any sort. For deputy warden there should be a man who is a sportsman and is in terested in the protection of fish and game. He should enforce the laws in accordance with the spirit of those laws and do so without fear and without favoritism. When the state fish and game com mission was created it was character ized ns a move to take the fish and game dapartment out of politics. The action of the board with reference to the local deputyshlp will indicate whether or not this idea is to be followed. very similar to the costumes worn at the recent Elks minstrels. For theatrical purposes such tailoring does very well and at times people will pay $1 per to see such a show. But if John Hays Hammond wore such a costume at the coronation he did not represent this republic at all for knee breeches are no longer part of the native dress in America. Did all the foreign representatives wear such costumes? v If so it would be interesting to see a photograph showing the Chinese " representative decked out in such toggery. BELONGS TO THE PCIJLIC. The department of the interior has ruled against the Cunningham claim ants for Alaska coal and the antl conservatlonists are raising a howl as was to be expected. Yet how much better for the Alaska coal to remain iii the hands of the government for the time being than for it to go to the Morgan-Guggenheim syndicate to be held In cold storage by that con cern. The great natural resources of the country should not be allowed tc go to monopolists. The resources belong to all the people and they should be held by the federal govern ment until a plan can be adopted under which the resources may be developed for the benefit of the peo ple, not for the benefit of men already rolling in wealth secured through the enjoyment of unfair privileges. train rooberies down there smacks cf the olden days when such events were common occurences. On good authority it is predicted that the extension of the Umatilla project will be made. However, we have had many good predictions in the past. What is needed is work. There should be 'excitement of seme sort in connection with that wild mule race on the fourth. The Boy Scout movement is In bad In Pendleton because of their pie eating propensities. TIME lOU ACTION. Prior to the paving of Main and Court streets several years ago the East Oregonian urged that the elec tric arid telephone companies be re quired to place their wires under ground 'v else remove them to the tide strt-'.-ts. However no action to this effect was takn despite the fact that the ti'y doubtless has complete authority under its police powers to order the poles removed, the overhead wires teing a nuisance and a menace to human iife in times of fire. As a result of the city's slothful ness several years ago the poles are still In existence on Main and Court streets and neither company Bhowa any disposition to remove them. Now that further paving is to be done soon It Is a very favorable time to order the removal of the poles. The city council should pass an or dinance calling for the removal of the poles and overhead wires. It is ar; impr3vement that has long been deferred and the subject Is one that deserves the earnest and Immediate attention of the council. To post- OX THE RIGHT LINE. In arranging for alterations and improvements in the fair pavillion the fair board Is working along a line that will bring good results. A big arch is to be provided at the en trance and this will not only add to the appearance of the pavilion but will greatly facilitate the handling of the crowds. It is too much to ex pect thousands of people to pass single file through a narrow entrance way. The band stand is also to be moved and enlarged and the seating capacity of the pavilion greatly in creased. It see ns entirely safe for the fair board to count upon an enormous attendance at the fair this fall, es pecially during the last three days of the show. The throng that will be here for the Round-up will demand ei.tertainrr.ent of evenings and noth ing finer could be provided for them than a good program at the fair pa vilion. The visitors enjoyed the fair last year and they will do so again.
