Pendleton, Tuesday, June 27, 1911 CATTLE MARKET REMAINS STEADY 1kavy movement does not effect prices Ojiallty of Sheep Tends to Hurt Trade unci Prices Weukeit Lambs so 50 CenUi Swiuo Duslncss Shows Improvement Willi Limited Supply. (From Friday's Journal.) There was a heavy movement of cattle at North Portland this morn ing, a total of 406 head being receiv ed compared with CC head a week ago. Shipments were principally from California, 11 loads arriving from Merced this morning. Condon was the only local shipper or note. The cattle market at the local yards remains In much the name position as during recent days, but fancy Cal ifornia stuff brought $6.15. Steadi ness is shown for real good quality but poor stuff Is sold below its actual worth. Killers are showing no uls position to favor shipments of off iuality cattle and for that reason are not offering the prices they formerly diil for this class of stock. The Portland market has become known throughout the country aa paying extreme values for poor qual ity and as long as this condition last ed. It was no Incentive for feeders to put out a better class of stuff. Poor stuff brought more In proportion to Its worth than real top quality. This condition has come to an end, because i packers have seen the folly of It. ; At Chicago today there was a steady tone in the cattlo trade but prices' were generally unchanged. ! At South Omaha cattle were steady to weak. ' Nominal cattle values at North Portland ore: liest steers $6.15 Ordinary steers 6.00 Best cows 4.75 Medium cows 4.50 Poor to fair cows $3.00 4.00 Best bulls , 4.50 Fancy bulls 4.00 Ordinary bulls $3.75 4.25 CALVES. Pest light $7.50 Ordinary 7.00 Poor . $3.00 4.00 Sheep Murkct Reniulns Poor. Poor quality is hurting the sheep and lam'j trade at North Portland more than anything else. Quality Is generally missing among the arrivals in the local yards. This would ac count for the sale late yesterday af ternoon of 1152 wethers at $3. While the stock averaged 92 pounds and came from east of the mountains, It was of very poor quality. Price on lambs dropped to $5.25 5.30. This is a loss of 50c. Today's showing of sheep and lambs was rather light, totals being 323 head compared with 853 head a week ago. At Chicago the sheep trade was slow and with a weaker tendency, but quotations were unchanged from recent days. At South Omaha the sheep market was steady. Sheep and lamb prices at North Portland today: Yearlings $3.90 "Wethers $3.00 03.75 Ewes 2.603.25 Lambs 5.005.30 Feed sheep 2.002.50 Hogs Aro Held Firm. Much strength Is still shown in the swine trade here. There were only limited offerings In the open market, although total arrivals for the 24 hours reached 1152 head. Ten loads of these came from the Mis souri river territory direct to local killers. The only arrivals consisted of a few head from Harrisburg and another small lot from Condon. At Chicago today there was a firm tone In the hog market with prices fractionally higher. Tops sold at $6.60. Nominal swine values at North Portland: Best blockers $7.00 Medium light 6.90 Heavy packers 6.60 Rough packers $5.006.60 Feeders 7.00 7.25 Pressure in Wheat Pit. Chicago, June 23. There was fur ther pressure In the wheat pit today and the market opened and closed lower. The start was l-4c down and the closing 3-4c to 7-8c under yes terday's final figures. Forelgti markets were generially lower. There was again no session at Liverpool, Antwery was 1 l-4c lower, while Paris was unchanged to l-4c down for wheat and unchanged to lc lower for flour. World's shipments for Monday are forecast at 8,800,000 bushels, exclus ive of North America. This com pares with 9,088,000 bushels last week. Argentina shlnments: Wheat 1.8 Id. 000 bushels, compared with 1,928,000 j bushels last week and 1,120,000 bushels a year ago.
