Hogs dropped from 20 to 25c today In the Portland yards. Sales of this morning's arriv als were made at a late hour and $10.05 was the extreme top and only two lots went at this figure. For what Is ordinarily called top stuff J 10 was the top and It looks as If a- still lower pirce will rule hero unless there is a change In the eastern situation. Special feature of todays cattle market here was the receipt of 10 loads from Montana. The fact that feed Is scarce all through the interior is forcing the marketing of cattle at this period, and therefore with forced sales, prices are scarcely healthy or normal. There was a fair showing of live stock supplies In the yards today, a total of 477 hogs, 436 cattle and 68 shi'ip being received. Very little good stuff Is now com ing to market, and therefore repre sentative sales on cattle are extremely poor. With nothing offering In the cow market was sold this morning above $3.75, still some later arrivals were of good quality and will bring mor e at the afternoon sale. I'nu-tlcnlly No Change In-Hog Market. Only a handful of sheep arrived. That market remains nominal, with quotations as previously printed. Among tlie Shippers. YOUNG CAIilFORNIAN ' TO "CLEAN' UP" PARIS Paris Clifford Grant Cook, a young San Franciscan and brother of Miss Ethel Cook, who married Clar ence Postley, has revolutionised Paris. He has persuaded the municipal au thorities to let him clean the city hall which like all the other public build- attend. "Always at Your Service" Phone Main 40. Ings of Paris, has not been cleaned since It was built. The French way Is to do a little scraping and brush ing during two weeks each year when the various departments take their vacation. Toung Cook, seeing the dirty build ings, thought of the "sand blast" pro cess by which American buildings are cleaned and finally convinced the au thorities that the thing could be done. They told him to try his plan on a private house, No. 124 Boulevard ilaussman. He got experts and In five days made the house front look like new. The French way of hand scrap ing takes five weeks. All Paris went to see the sight and now Mr. Cook has begun work on the interior stone work of the Hotel De Ville and will clean up the Chamber of Deputies In the Louvre and all the fatuous buildings in Paris. With the close of the London season, Rotten Row Is at present undergoing some much need ed repairs. At the Apsley House end the way has for a long time been bad ly drained and after the rain the wa ter has laid there in pools, causing a god deal of annoyance to riders and horses. "This Is at last being put right, and a small army of workmen is busy. A fact which Is not generally known is that the whole of Rotten Row Is covered with brick, with only an Inch and a half of Thames sand above. In the portion of the ride now under repair the bricks are to be re placed by broken ones in order the better to facilitate drainage. The use of Iron has been traced back to the ninth century, B.
