Had he lived until next Monday they would have lived together as man and wife for exactly sixty years. In answer to the call of the west, Mr. and Mrs. Frazier and their small family oined a large party of emi grants and crossed the plains to Cal ifornia with an ox team in 1854. They took up their residence in Sonoma county, where they continued to live until 1879. In that year they came overland to Umatilla county, settling near Athena and this county had been their home continuously ever since that time. Following their removal to Pendle ton In 1883, Mr. Frazier was engaged for many years in the truck and draw business. All of his life, up until the time of receiving the stroke of paraly sis, he was a strong, robust man and the affliction which made him a help less invalid at times was almost more than he could endure. In addition to his wife he is sur vived by the following children: Al bert A. Frazier, Humbolt county, Cal.; Thomas Frazier, San Louis O'Bisbo county, Cal.; Charles A. Frazier, Col fax, Wash.; J. E. Frazier, Susanville; Mrs. S. F. Sharp, Athena; L. Q. Fra zier, J. A, Frazier and Effie Jean Frazier, all of Pendleton. But when it actually comes to the point of making up its mind whether to fight or to surrender any part of Its power and privilege the church will fight. It is already preparing to fight. Its wealth, its influence and its intelligence are enormous and Its preparations are ominously thor ough. On the state's side will be the king, the cabinet, the whole of the liberal and official forces, the powerful re publican organizations and the so cialists: on the church's the - episco pate and clergy, the entire conserva tive party, the aristocracy, all the ig norant classes and practically all the women of the country. The Alternative. The church's aim, if the worst comes, will be to depose Alfonso and to enthrone the Carlist pretender, Don Jaime. So long as he remained faith ful to the clericals, the clericals re mained faithful to Alfonso, and Jaime stood no chance. If the clericals de clare for him, however, he will In stantly become formidable. The cler icals have not done so yet, for they are not even yet quite sure that Al fonso will not return to them. But they will do It the moment they be come positively convinced they havev lost him. Carlist agents are already busy in the country in anticipation of a clerical declaration in favor of their chief. Jaime has stated that he will not Interfere in Spain unless it be comes necessary for him to maintain or restore .order. The clericals will see, in due season that he is furnished with the excuse he says he wants. How a fight between Alfonso and Jaime would result admitting the latter to be supported by the clerl cals nobody knows. It rather looks as if Alfonso would win but the cleri cals are tremendously strong. Alfonso in Jeopardy. Assuming that Jaime and the cleri cals lose, it is still no foregone con clusion that Alfonso, individually, will win. The Vatican believes the present agitation in Spain and Portu gal is not only anti-clerical but that the agitators propose a union of the two countries under a president. SPAIN'S FIGHT AGAINST POPE. Jenkins of Pi lot Rock, who died Thursday night at Hidaway springs, was held this af ternoon at 2 o'clock at the Folsom undertaking parlors. The services were conducted by Rev. Nathan Evans of the Methodist church and the interment was in Olny cemetery. Wlieut Tests 65 Pounds. C. F. Daniels, who tills the soil out In the south Cold Springs district, thinks the test of his wneat crop this season will stand comparison with any in the county. He brought in a sample this morning to the Balfour Guthrie company which tested 65 pounds to the bushel; which Is a rec ord any farmer might well be proud of. The wheat was of the red chaff variety. Mr. Daniels has not sold his crop but says when he can get 80 cents he will be ready to let go. Moose In Baltimore. Baltimore, Md., Aug. 80. The Vatican backed up the archbish ops and bishops and demanded the withdrawal of all the measures Pre mier Canalejas was pushing. The Madrid government refused and re called. !tB ambassador from the Vati can. There, at the moment, the matter stands. The Cortes is in recess and it will be October before the anti-clerical measures proposed by the premier can be passed. Unless he withdraws them, which will not happen, they will pass then. King Alfonso and Premier Cana lejas would unquestionably like to back out of their program If they could. Failing that, they would like to delay as long as possible. They cannot back, out because they believe they would precipitate a revolution by doing so. They cannot delay too long or the antl-clerlcals will become suspicious of them and the ever-im minent revolution will start. There Is that much reason for thinking that the climax will come soon. Still, it is certain that the king and premier will move as slowly as they dare. Church Wants no Fight. The church does not want to fight at all if it can avoid it. It knows that fighting will Involve It in heavy risks. It hopes against hope hat the state will vield. Whether this Is true or not, there Is no doubt that the Spanish radicals question the possibility of permanent ly maintaining satisfactory conditi ons under a monarchy. Alfonso hap pens, for the moment, to be on their side, but they distrust him and would assuredly take advantage of any good opportunity they might see to throw him overboard in the confusion of a civil war. Alfonso's change from the clericals to the antl-clerlcals has changed the situation somewhat since last summer. The issue was clear cut then between Alfonso and the clericals on one side and the anti-clerlcals and republicans upon the other. Alfonso has allied himself now with the group which aparently ought to win in the end. Eut whether victory for his group will make for greater security of his own tenure Is more doubtful.
