People and newspapers opposing the Kooseytlt-Pinchot conservation loiify are loul in declaring for state! 'nservation in prefertxee to action! by the national government. Now there are many things to be said in favor of state conservation. Eut most of those who are howling for It are doing so because they know it nn t be had. They know that were it left entirely to the states to adopt conservation laws little could be ac complished. To this rule Oregon Is an exception because in this mate the people have a close hold on legisla tion. Eut In the states where bo.s rule still prevails it woull be easy for the big interests to block conser vation legislation. Anti-conservation-ifts know this and so they argue for state conservation. Their plea is not made in good faith. LISTEN TO THEM. Next week the big demonstration train will 1m; in eastern Oregon and farmers will have an opportunity to secure some Information from men who have Btudied agriculture from bojh a scientific and a practical standpoint. They eus s; ;'.o:c-r farm ing in eastern Ortgori ani it is a timely suggestion. At this time there U little intensive farming in eastern Oregon outside 'of the irrigated dis tricts. This is true despite the fact that much of our "land is well suited to a higher state of agriculture than that followed at present. On much of the land now devoted solely to v. heatraising more profitable crops may be raised provided judicious se ' lections are made and proper tillage 1 methods foliowed. Farmers should 1 be glad to listen to the advice of the men from the agricultural college. Go hear them and then give their sug gestions a good, honest trial. It Is from experimentation that progress 1 results. THE QUARANTINE RAISED. i.ii'.ji uvnii any 1111: iuii.iiaaci nan .,Burance that the ih wlI1 be fre, from dirase.
