Hunt, of Newark, president of the New Jersey Sewage Commission, ha Just returned home after three months' travel in Europe, where he studied various methods of disposing I of aewage. He found little or Interest In Germany in this field, but the sew age disposal farm of Paris were high, ly interesting. The so-called farma are established on land which la ownl by the . government. The sewage la con ducted to them In great trunk aeweta and spread upon a soil thoroughly adapted for such purpose. The matter of sewage disposal la agitating all the cities of the British Isles, while In London a special commission ha been appointed to consider ways and means for preventing the further pollution of the Thames, The great increase In the population of cities and the consequent Increasing danger of pollution of water supplies are bringing the sewage prob lem to the front everywhere. As HI- . tera for water supplies will soon be established in all large cities, so will scientific means of disposing of sewage be everywhere adopted. The method of dumping sewage into streams answered very well when the communities were few and far between, but with the settlement of the country this has be come an abominable practice. ' PROTECTION IS AT STAKE. American Economist "There ia not a state In the Union to day,' said Senator Lodge in bia speech before the republican national conven tion, "which could be carried for free trade against protection." There la not a free-trader in the country who posses ses a degree of discernment worth con sideration who does not know that thla statement Is absolutely true. As Sen ator Lodge said, further on in his speech, "never was a policy more fully justified by Its works," than our tariff policy. And it' has been Justified. in every state in the Union and In every section of every state. The more wily ot the free-traders are, by raising side issues, attempting to make the peopla of the country forget or overlook the fact that the tariff Issue Is Involved in the coming presidential election. With a rampant free-trader like Bryan, how ever, pitted against President McKin- ley, who la and for' long has been the very head, and front of American pro tectionists, the continuance of our pro tective policy ia Just as much at stake as if there, were no other Issue before the country. As the people of the coun. try value their comfort and prosperity, they must make no mistake about the fact. KENTUCKY WOULDN'T NOTICE IT. Loulivllle Courier-Journal.'' When somebody In New "Orleans made somebody else a bet of $10,000 to $4,500 that McKmley would be re-elected, a re porter rushed to the telegraph ofilce and Informed the world that the news went crashing through the city like an electric shock." If a little trans action like that realtes such a crsnh !.-. New Orleans what would happen If a few Kentucky gentlemen sat down In New Orleans to play a modest game of draw poker?
