ROSKBURG, Ore., March 5. Charles Drain, one of the well-known pioneers of Southern pregon, and who has lived in tho vicinity of the town of Drain all his life, was found dead about a mile from his home. Coroner Jowett was summoned to the scene and left on the 9:15 train this morning for Drain. From the information obtainable, it seoms that in the afternoon to look at some wcod Mr. Drain went out In tho timber in tho afternoon and took a hammorless riflo along with him, thinking that possibly ho might have an opportunity of using it. Night camo on and Mr. Drain did not return home. Tho family was much alarmed over his non-appearance and at an early hour in the morning friends started in search of the missing man. Going to that part of the woods -where it was supposed that Mr. Drain had gone, tho body was soon discovered. It was ascer tained that the man had been shot and had been dead some hours. All evidence points to the accidental dis charge of tho gun tho man was carry ing. Rumors of suicide are given llt tlo credence. Mr. Drain leaves a wife, two daugh ters, Miss Moda, who Is living in East ern Oregon, and Miss Alta, at Drain; also a son, Rolla Drain, who lives at Eugene. C. T. U. NOTES. t O By MRS. W. E. SMITH. The Twelfth district W. C. T. U. of Missouri (Independence district), has doubled Its number of unions In one year. Much work lias ueen uono among the children especially along Sunday school and scientific temper ance essay lines. The Independence union gave medals in the ward schools and a prize of ten dollars In tho high school. Bates City has done flne Sunday school work. Waverly has pushed medal contests, and Odes sa has omphaslzed Red Letter Days and social meetings. Tho Humane Society of Kansas City, Mo., at the instance of two wo men members, undertook to provide a Christmas dinner for the underfed horses of the city. A number of Chi cago women have taken up tho plan of putting tags upon unblanketed and otherwise mistreated horses standing in the streets. The printed tag reads thus: "To My Owner and Driver: Dear Master Please blanket me, for I am cold. Feed, water and shoe me reg ularly, and see that my harness fits comfortably, for I can feel and suffer as well as yourself. I am speaking through the Anti-Cruelty Society." Letters of appreciation concerning Mrs. Katharine Lent Stevenson's work on the other side of the world, continue to come from the several countries already visited. The execu tive committee of Victoria, Austra lia, W. C. T. U., passed the following resolution: "That the heartiest thanks are due to the World's W. C. T. U. for making it possible for us to enjoy the educative addresses and the wise counsel of their World's mis sioner, Mrs. Katharine Lent Steven son, and we trust she may be long spared In health and strength to give the unions the benefit of her conse crated ability and ripened experi ence." NOTE OF WARNING. In the Harrison Street municipal court, Chicago, a few days ago, a man was brought before Judge Fake on tho charge of enticing young boys into a life of crime. A boy of fifteen, from a good and respected suburban family, told the court how this mod ern Fagin had offered to teach him how to steal, pick pockets, enter houses for burglary, and kindred cri minal pursuits. Three other boys, all in their teens, gave similar testi mony. Judge Fake gave the man the highest sentence the law allowed, and placed the boys under probation to Henry Neil, associated with Judge Cloland in his work for tho reform justice. In this case, through Infor mation "iven by a boy, the police ar rested the criminal before he had ac utually led tho boys into a life of crime; but the revelation will In crease tho wntchfulness of parents. Boys and girls should not be allowed too free a rein in visiting the congest ed parts of a city; or for that mat-, tor, In associating with strange per sons anywhere. TO ADVERTISE OREGON. Louis W. Hill to Send Car of Oregon Products Over Nation. PORTLAND, Ore., March 5. Oregon Is to get wide publicity throughout the east during the com ing year if tho iplan of Louis W. Hill, president of tho Great Northern Railway, works out. Mr. Hill pro poses to gather exhibits of what Oregon raises and place them in an exhibit car which will be sent east and routed through the sections of the country where It will do tho most good. That these exhibits will ac complish a great deal, accompanied as they will bo by a lecturer, is cer tain and that many thousands of set tlers will be brought to this state as a direct result Is believed. An actual demonstration of what this stato can produce In fruits, grains, grasses, vegetables, etc., will unquestionably prove convincing to tho easterner. Attrnctivo literaturo will accompany tho exhibit car, tell ing of opportunities here for the homo seeker and tho lecturer will answer questions about this state. Prosldout Hill asks support for his plan from Oregon pooplo In tho gath ering of exhibits with which to equip the oar. His company now has rep resentatives In this state collecting information to be used In the adver tising campaign to bo waged by Mr. Hill. ---- f-j i t i i i i Steamer Wilhelmma N. WAGNER, Mnater.
