Mc Farlln, the well-known North Inlet cranberry grower, Is likely to be the causo of much litigation. Several months ago, nephews of Mr. McFar lin began suit against the widow, now Mrs. T. J. Lewis, for a part of the estate on the ground that their father was interested with him in tho project. They made Mr. Fra zer who purchased the place a party to the suit and now, it Is understood, Mr. Frazer will begin suit against Mrs. Lewis charging her with mis representations when she sold him the place. SACCHI Corner Commercial and Second St If You Cnn Solve Tliein OITlinnil You Will IIuvc Forty Professors Reaten. BOSTON, Mass., March 5. These problems were put up to 40 Harvard professors by Mr. Griffin, a lightning calculator, at a private quiz: "My birthday is April 23. If the next time my birthday comes on Eas ter Sunday I shall be 20 per cent older than next April, how old am I now?" And yet, again: "If on tliat Eas ter birthday 'the population of Bos ton were GO per cent more than the sum o.f ail the numbers from 14,107 to the next prime number above, and they should all celebrate my birthday by giving me as many Eas ter eggs at 41 cents a dozen, what would he the common interest on the money at 3 per cent from that day until the next time my birthday falls on Easter Sunday?" Griffith said ho could solve them without putting pen to paper, Ho was not challenged. The professors have been at work on the problems ever since. Properly it was Mr. Griffin who was being quizzed and not tho pro fessors, and it was only at the close of the hearing that he so unkindly turned the tables on them. He had been Invited by Prof. Julian C. Cool edge of the Harvard mathematics de partment to demonstrate his abil ities. Professors and Instructors all expressed their amazement at what they saw. The questions came In rapid fire, to bo answered off-hand, no less rapidly, while at a far slower rato the questioners sought with blackboard and chalk eight of them at a time to certify their correctness. J. J. CLINKINBEARD, tho well known Coos River rancher, was in Marshfleld today on business. RAY PINKERTON, who is teaching school on Coos River, is in Marsh fleld today on business. JAS. MURRAY, the well-known trav eling man, left yesterday for San Francisco. W. C. WAITE of Acme, Oregon, ar rived hero yesterday to receive medical treatment. MRS. H. E. BESSEY and sons, Lawrence and George, left today for Bandon where they will visit for a few days. Tho steamer Limy Noff will arrive here from San Francisco tomorrow with about 100 tons of freight. She will take back a cargo of Beaver Hill coal. Sho was chartered by the Southern Pacific for ono trip only. Whether she may bo chartered for a longer timo will probably depend on the San Francisco market and tho rapidity with which sho can handle coal cargoes. Sho sailed from San Francisco Friday. Monday tho county assessor and his forco will start out on their yearly rounds to get at tho amount of prop erty, both real and personal in tho county. Tho work of making tho as sessment this year will probably oc cupy about six weeks unless unex pected difficulties are encountered. County Assessor Thrift and Ave dep uties will attend to the assessment this year. Their names and districts areas follows: J. S. Lawrence, Myr tle Point and the river betweon there and Bandon and to the Curry county line. W. W. Williams of Myrtle Point, tlio north, south and middle fork and Kitchen Creek sections. Charles Jackson of Marshfleld, tho nortli end of tho county and tho Coos River section. W. J. Rust of Marsh fleld, will assess Marshfleld. C. J. Van ZIlo will assess North Bend. Mr. Thrift himself will have Bandon and Coquille. Talk Good Roads. The county court convened Wed nesday In its regular bi-monthly ses sion. Nearly all of the road super visors handed In their reports as re quested but It was impossible to get through tho entire list and the road business was continued until this morning, when the remainder of tho reports were received. Tho reports show that he roads of tho county aro generally in a fair condition though nearly every district lias some sec tions of bad roads. However with the supervisors working In harmony and tho commissioners giving their aid as required there is littlo doubt that the roads of the county will bo in a far bettor condition next year. JACKSON COUNTY PESTS. A General Cleanup of All Kinds of Trees IteiiiK Made. MEDFORD, March 5. Tho war In Rogue River Valley over tho fruit Inspectors Is a thing of the past. State Horticulturist Carson, at the urgent demand of tho Rogue River Horticultural Society, having rescin ded his order that no additional fruit inspectors bo employed, and tho en tire forco of eight men Is now at work under tho direction of Profes sor P. J. O'Gara of tho department of agriculture, and of County Fruit Inspector, J. W. Myers, forcing a clean-up of fruit trees moro thor ough than has before been made In this valley. Tho towns aro being given tho greater attention by Professor O'Gara and his corps of inspectors for the commercial orchards aro practically free of pests. Medford is the first town to feel tho Iron hand of a vigorous enforcement of tho state fruit pest laws, and a largo number of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs that were too badly infested with pests to be saved were cut down. Those spared aro to ho sprayed by tho owners or will be cut down by tho Inspectors. That'a hardship shall not bo put on any one. County Inspector Myers has arranged for a largo power sprayer to spray such trees as tho owners wish to save Tho entire forco of inspectors went to Talent and from there will In succession give a cleanup to tho othor towns of, tho county.
