Illinois courts have decided that playing for a prize, toward tho cost of which each player hns contrlbut ed, Is gambling. There are thou sands of gambling mothers. They congregate In halls and private houses to contest for a prize pur chased out of the "Jack pot" to which all have contributed. There fore, at least In the state of Illinois, they are gamblers and amenable to the laws against gambling. But sup pose the prize Is furnished by the hostess, does the bridge whist craze, which hns spread all over tho United States have no pernicious Influence? Are not children nnd homes neglect ed, nnd boys led to think there Is no harm In betting on horse racing, pooling, and gambling with cards and dice? There is an Intoxication without wine. Bridge whist Is such an intoxicant. It consumes days nnd nights or valuable time. It ener vates all the higher powers of wo men and brings mothers Into con tempt in their own families. Investigation shows that tho one lone legal saloon in Tennessee, per ched on the Cumberland mountains, four miles from a school house and more than that from anywhere, stands on land owned by Col. A. M. Shook, a staunch stave-wide prohibi tion. It appears that Colonel Shook nnd leased tlio land to a man near McMlnnvllle, for pasturage purposes, and he subleased It to Conger, who opened tho saloon. It was n huge joke on Colonel Shook, and n great surprise to find the much talked of saloon on his property. It Is be lieved that the sublease Is void, as the original lease stipulates that the land Is to bo used for pasturage pur poses. If Conger does not volun tarily closo up his place ejectment proceedings will bo begun, and his saloon obliterated, there will be no place In Tennessee where liquor.can be sold without vlolntlng the prohi bition law, as no other spot can be found .four miles from a school house. WHY-HAY IS GRADED LOW. Tho rules of tho National Hny As sociation recognizes 23 grades of hny, which seem to fall Into 5 clas ses: Timothy, clover, mixed timo thy and clover, wild grasses, and nl- falfa. Choice timothy hay must bo sound, properly cured, of bright na tural color, not mixed with more than one-twentieth of other grnsses, and well baled. Lower grades of timothy are Nos. 1, 2 and 3, and "no grade." Clover hay has two grades, No. 1 and No. '2, No. 1 clover must bo medium clrfver, sound, properly cured, not mixed with more than one-twentieth of other grasses and well baled. Choice alfalfa hay, must be reasonably fine lenfy alfal fa of bright green color, baled. Oth er grndes of alfalfa are Nos. 1, 2 nnd 3, and "no grade." These rules are used by most cities that have ofilclal Inspection, A largo percentage of the timothy on tho mnrlfet is grnded uolow iNo. 1. Tho reasons nre that many mea dows nre cut for years, until they become weedy and mixed with other grasses, nni that the hay Is often out too Into, so that it loses tho bright natural color nnd palatabllity. If tho farmer would send to market noth'lng but what tho feeder con siders good he would get a higher price. It might be necessnry In some cases to educate tho country buyer also. Timothy has tho lead, especially among city feeders, because It Is not only nutritious but palatable and non-laxativ?, and tho horso Is not likely to overload. Nevertheless, other kinds of hay would often prove better for tho feeder. Alfalfa, for In stance, has high mtiscle-hulldlng qualities and Is especially valuable for draft horses. It Is highly ro llshed, however, and the horso may overload. Doubtless tho feeder will In tlmo leurn that hay from legumes has great value when properly used, Meantlmo the farmer Is obliged to Include clover and other legumes In his rotation In order to maintain the fertility of his land. In regard to good rotations the U. S. depnrtmont of agriculture Is glad to glvo advlco. In any case, tho farmer who sells hay should seek to produce the high est grade by kooplng his meadows pure and by proper methods of cut lng, curing, and stacking. Fortunately I Insisted upon having Foloy's Honey nnd Tar. It quickly cured mo. My wlfo has since used Foley's Honey and Tar with tho same success." RED CROSS Phar macy, (John Preuss, Prop.)
