The Coquille city council last night ad opted a resolution condemning Front street and ordering It closed to traf fic. This morning It was barricaded and teams not permitted to pass. The action of the council follows the property owners along Front street remonstrating against the proposed Improvement in such a number as to stop the council from going ahead with the work. The plank is badly worn. The reason given by the re- monstrators was that the railroad was going to change the grade of Its tracks and this would ruin the pa ving. The council decided that the old planking is badly worn that se rious injury might be caused and consequently closed the street. What the developments will be can't be forecasted although It has caused quite a furore here. Breakwater Due. The Break water Is due in early this eve ning, having left Astoria early this morning. Captain Magenn reported seventy passengers aboard. TOPICS OF' THE TIMES No one seems to be sensible except In an occasional spot. Although we speak of this as an age of Improvement and Intelligence millions of people still believe that the saucer was made to drink out of. A Tennessee woman has obtained a divorce because her husband stay ed at home too much. Presumably that prevented her from going out as much as she would like to. A new church in Washington Is to have a swimming pool and shower baths. They ought to prove a great help when the pastor's sermons are a bit too warm for comfort. Last year China sent 100 tons of human hair to this country for use In making fashionable switches, pads and curls, and already a great deal of It has been getting into the butter. The Norrlstown, Pa., murderer who has expressed a desire to be shot rather than hanged probably figures that he is entitled to that sort of finish because he was half shot when he committed his crime. One of the Wright brothers says: "A gasoline engine is an uncertain quantity at tho best." And when you combine a gasoline engine with an aeroplane you ought to see your finish without much difficulty. Prehistoric man, according to the scientists, enjoyed better health than the present generation. But In those early days, you will remember, there were no newspapers filled with pa tent medicine advertisements. $$$ A BOOSTER'S PLEDGE. I will try to always say some thing good about my city and my peoplo or keop my mouth shut, I realise that It this conunu- nlty Is good onough to live in and make my money In, it Is the propor place to spend my nion- oy.
