CHAIRMAN PAYNE, of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives, has said that the imposition of the ln- come tax' "would make us a Nation of liars." Perhaps he thinks that is something worse than a Nation of thieves. For our part, we hold that, as a nation, we are drifting to the edge of both evils at a tremendous pace and the National conscience hardening as It hastens. Commerce, politics, business, so ciety; everything 'susceptible of jug .gling Is prostituted to the lust of the dollar, the place, the advantage extraordinary, with but little heed given to the course adopted, save thnt it shall be successful. Sham, deceit, humbuggery are paramount everywhere and It takes the He, and the theft, to support them and keep thtim going. Graft and grab are rules of the hour; and we have even gotten so far on the road to consu mato meaness and Immorality that we have abandoned the "Thou Shalt Not" for such contemptible pleas, as "They all do It," "A man must live, you know," "Outers do tnese things, why not I?" "If I don't do it, Bomeone else will' and a myriad of 'paltry panderings equally base and dishonest and stultifying. Mr. Payne need not trouble to put forward any such common and whol ly acceptable doctrine as this. We have arrived alright, and the only issues loft are who shall lie the best and steal the most. He, himself, is nn arch-representative of tho cult of dishonor that is sweeping us to moral disruption and degradation; he and his fellows whose trust bound souls are mortgaged to tho creed and craft of the combines. It is but n question of reaching the pass where the glossed crimes of tho period shall make the people mad and reckless from denial and defeat and move them to worse thingB, or better. That day will como, and with It the revulsion that shall savo us from the ultimate peril or sink tho nation in a blood-atonc-mont that shall clearly mark a new era. And then Qod help the men responsible for tho crisis. Archbishop Christie Wants For Parochial School Here. It is understood that negotiations are on which may result in the pur chase of the J. E. Oren residence property In South Marshfleld by the Catholic church and the transform ing of It Into a' parochial school. Archbishop Christie of Portland, who visited here., a few weeks ago, Is said to have expressed that desire when he learned that Mr. Oren was about to move away and that the property was '"for-sale. Archbishop Christie will visit here again this fall and it is not unlikely that arrangements will be made at that time to take the property over. NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS.
