Train, who has a berry and chickon ranch about a mile and a half east of Myrtle Point, is another who is furnishing proof that energy and perseverance can wring from tho fertile soil of this .section profits 1 gold dollars, and from hill land at that. Two years ago Mr. Train ac quired 33 acres of hill land, paying at the rate of $30 per acre." At that time thero were but few acres of tho piece under cultivation, dilapidated house and no outbuild ings worth mentioning. IJq placed practically his entire capital in a payment on the land and went to work. In two years he has six hen houses containing about 400 laying hens; hatched S00 chickens this ppring; has an acre in strawberries, estimated at about 10,000 plants, has out 200 fruit and walnut trees, has considerable land set in garden and several acres in small grain,, corn and potatoes. As an income" from his Investment his chickens aro now bringing him between $90 nnd $100 a month; he expects to sell be tween $500 and $G00 worth of ber ries from his -acre patch, and as a side issue has his garden, his cow& and other aids to living. A patch set out to loganberries promises an abundant yield this year and pros pects are that $50 or a $100 worth of this fruit will bo harvested. Last year he sold $50 of sweet corn from three-fourths of an acre, and then marketed but about one-half of tho crop. On his place ho has twenty acres of fine second growth tlmbdr that he Is not worrying about. He thinks he can well afford to reserve that for his children and It should be worth considerable to them in twenty or thirty years. This spring he has wheat 15 Inches In height and oats almost as large, which is better development than is shown on some of the bottom lands. Last year he raised a celery plnnt that weighed two and a half pounds, Bhowing pos sibilities In celery culture, It takes no stretch of Imagination to forecast that with a continuance of his per severance and a fair share of for tune, Mr. Train "n 111 be independent ly rich In a number of years. If ho can do what he has done in two years with raw hill land, it oan bo surmised that the future has some thing good In store for him. Mr. Trajn will ostlmato tho possible val ue of his home, but Mrs. Train re fuses to name a price. "I consider It almost priceless," sho says, "I am perfectly saticfted and happy and do not wish to try 3 change." Mr. and Mrs. Train have a large and happy family of children and their lot may well bo envied by those who as sume more "style" but have less hap piness, comfort and good health.
