A. C Benson. Entered at the postoffice at Marshfield, Oregon, for transmission throuzh the ir-ils as second class mall matter. OFFICIAL PAPER OF COOS COUNTY. --4,. - a 0...-. -... i t LET US HAVE HARMONY - -----------.- w rE HWE THE SACRED words of Holy Writ to sustain the state ment that lack of unity and discord always result In destruction for dos cot the Good Book say that "a house divided against Its If cannot stand." Cx3 Bay never had greater need of this admonition than it has to daj By their almost unanimous vote en the Port Commission proposi tion the people have proven that they can get together on public mat ters. Alreadv they are beginning to reap the reward of thi3 spirit of harmony and progress In words of praise and promise of aid In public Improvements from the outside. It was an enthusiastic and helpful mes sage that Coos Bay sent to the world on Mondav of this week. It should not be nullified now by petty personal jealousies and bickerings over the appointments. The position of Port Commissioner Is a public one which personalities should not be permitted to dominate or dictate. The Chamber- of Commerce of Marshfield and North Bend have re commended five prominent and representative citizens for appointment by the governor. These publ'c bodies were active in securing the pas sage of the Port Bill and doubtless feit they were warranted in this action. The men are all well qualified and worthy. Anyway the final selection Is an arbitrary jnatter In he hands of Governor Benson. The iim3 preference would be that the commissioners be chosen by the tyillot or if bv appointment that the Governor be guided by the people's choice in the ame manner. However, the only thing required is an honest conervat:ie but progressive administration of the duties and any man or body of men who fail in any of these requirements will hear promptlv and emphatically from the people En'Irely apart from the personal element The Times believes in and endeavors to promote unity in all public propositions. Life is too short for strife. There is too much to be done and too little time in which to do it to fritter it away In petty personal bickerings when all our ef forts should be directed to the broader and nobler purpose of the common good. There is uplift in unity and happiness in harmony, in communal as well as individual life. Let the same spirit of unity that dominated the election prevail in the work that is to be accomplished. If there arp better men for the position than those suggested by the Chambers of Commerce It Is perfectly proper to go about trying to -have them appointed, but let us settle our differences at home and then abide by the decision. It is not necessary to kick one man down in order to bclost another. The Times understands there is a petition in circulation endorsing B. C. Bradbury for a place on the commission. That Is pTfertly proper. His friends are entitled to a hearing and a showing. That is one of the inherent rights of eery American citi zens. Patrick Hennessy is also mentioned by his friends for the place and there shouh' be no denying any man an aspiration to an honorable position, but It should not be permitted to degenerate into a petty per sona! squabb'e for p'ace and power. The Times understands that in each Instance th men themselves do not aspire but their friends are undent In the presentation of their claims. Personal animosity should not be permitted. Let the contest be a friendly ore Let every man boost for his friends but there need not be any knocking on the other fellow. There has never been a time when it was so necessary to show the vrorld the real meaning of the Coos Bay spirit as there is just now. Harmony and unity should be our watchwords By working together wonder may be accomplished while by dissipating our energies in per sonal differences we will fritter awav our opportunity. "A home divided against Itself cannot stand " and a community given to personal quarrels cannot hope to occupy a place in the pro cession of progress and prosperity and It doesn't deserve to.
