Taft will re ceive a greater compensation than any other president of tho United States. His salary will be much in excess of that paid to President Roosevelt during his last year la tho White Houso, though nominally it would appear that both woro en titled to $75,000. As a matter of fact President Roosevelt had a flat salary of SBO.OOOand in addition to that there was $25,000 at his dls posil for traveling cxpinses. But ho was entitled to only so much of tho $25,000 as was actually required for travel, and out of that amount ho used approximately $9,000. So that his salary, with travel allowance, only aggregated $59,000. President Taft 6n the other hand, gets no allowance for travel, but his salary is fixed at $75,000, and I! his traveling expenses aro no greater than his predecessor ho will be. bet tor paid than RooBOvolt by $16,000. The probabilities are, however, that President Taft will consume moro money in travel than any president In times past; he Is given to travel, and will spend much time on tho road In tho next regular session of con gress another attempt will be ruado to vote tho president $25,000 an nnually for traveling expenses and If this rhould go through Taft would bo anywhere from $25,000 to $39, 000 Letter off tha nhis immediato predecessor in the matter of compensation.
