Neuhau sen has wired the secretary of tho Interlor as follows: "Although deeply appreciative of. prospective appointment October 1 ns Indian Inspector, I feel that I should take advantage of present business opportunities assuring' greater financial rewards than gov ernment service. I therefore re spectively tender my reslgnation herewlth, subject to customary trans fer of government records and prop eray. Telegraphic acceptance ot resignation is therefore requested, in order that Prosecutors Heney, Beck er and McCourt may immediately formulate such changes as my resig nation may necessitate In plans for land fraud trial of 10 defendants on October 12 and of Binger Harmanu on November 9, also of other de fendants later. I expect to remain In Portland and my testimony will be available under due legal process." Tho telegram acceding to Mr Neuhauson's request arrived last night. Mr. Nouhausen has been associated with tho prosecution of tho Oregon1 land frauds for nearly four years and has participated in every trial since the "11-7" case. Since It be came known that he Intended to re sign his position with tho govern ment ho has been offered several salaried positions but he has de clined all of them. "I shall never again work for ar salary only," said Mr. Neuhausen last night while discussing his future plans. "I like Portland and intend V to make my home here. Some east ern friends have asked mo to invest some of their money in Oregon lands and timber and I Intend to do so,, while making an occasional side in vestment myself. Tho timber mar ket has been pretty dull for the last oight months but it is now beginning to improve. For convenience I shall .. have on ofllec here in tho city." ' LIGHTS WENT OUT. Laek of Electricity Stops J. W. Ben nett's Flow of Oratory. Tho electric lights went flurry Tuesday evening and interfered somewhat with the proceedings at tho court house Hon. J. W. Bennett was arguing a case in chancery, -jvitb his usual earnest eloquence, when Judge- Hamilton called tho distin guished lawyer down, deciding that tho same arguments had already been offered. Just then tho lights went out and all was darkness, someone asked what was tho cause of tho defect? And Mr. Bennett answered (aside, of course) that it was tho decision of the court. Tho laugh went round tho bar; of courso we mean tho bar of justice. Co quille Sentinel.
