i3 M a m ia «Bg7«pr> ■E O E E E S aH Troops on tlie P lain s. The Regimental Flag, published at Santa Fe, New M exico, “ hits the nail on the head” when it, says: “ To subdue the Indians in Arizo na and New M exico, it will require a force of five thousand men. With «su ch a force, properly officered and equipped, the work can be done in less than six months. “ Five thousand men, divided into companies of fifty each, -would place one hundred such companies in the field .at one time, and this force could sweep Arizona and New M ex ico from end to end. “ The troops, however, will be re quired for constant, active and ar- dous service in the field, and not for extra duty in the Quartermaster D e partment. nor to spend their time in cleaning up and burnishing their arms, or cleaning the brasses and com bing the plumes on the new hel mets. They should be picked men, armed with Winchester or Henry (sixteen shooters) rifles, two of Colt’s improved breech-loading pis tols, and their equipments of the most simple kind. The horses should be California-half breeds, and should not be loaded down with useless ar tid es of harness for display, and should be kept in the best of trim for long and quick marches. The rations for the men should be the lightest and most simple kind; c o f fee, hard bread, jerked beef and to bacco should constitute the whole of it while in the field, and the re tained portion of the full ration is sued to the companies upon their re turn to the post. The rations should be baled in packages of not more than forty pounds each, covered with canvass or raw hide, and no mule laden with more than two packs. “ The men, while on scout, should take only one change of under cloth ing. and but one blanket in addition to the one under their saddle. All extra clothing and blankets should be carried on the pack mules, and never on a horse. The soldier’s out side clothing should consist of thick buckskin pants, and hunting shirt of the same material, with no guady or unnecessary trimmings on them. “ No lumbering army wagons should accompany them, but every thing should be carried upon mules so lightly laden as to be able to keep up with the horses. “ Marching by day should be avoided as much as possible, and when it has to be done, the com mand should be kept under the brow of ridges. In building fires to cook by of a night, great care should be taken to excavate holes deep enough to keep the light from , showing any great, distance. Would to heaven the men were in camp and the order to “ march” would immediately issue, to see if these two Territories—the fairest of the fair and the richest of the rich— could be freed from the presence of the blood thirsty Indian.
