J THE MORNTXG ORECONIAX, FRIDAY, SEPTE3IBER 10. 1920 17. IRISH PICKETS TO EXTEND ACT VTES Kcrthern Ports Included Protest to Britain. in WOMEN CARRY BANNERS Effort to Influence Stevedores and .Longshoremen at San Fran cisco Is Begun. SAN FRAXCISCO. Sept. 9. (Spe cial.) British ships and ships bound for British ports will be picketed by Irish sympathisers in an effort to tie up British shipping: until Great Brit ain changes her Irish policy and re moves her army of occupation from Ireland, according to announcement today from San Francisco headquar ters of the women's Irish Educational leacue. . The picketing, in protest against the incarceration of Terence Mac-Sw-lney, lord mayor of Cork, dying in Brixton prison of self-imposed starva tion, whjcli resulted yesterday in the walkout of stevedores engaged in coaling the British steamer Aluncas-te-r Castle, was continued along the waterfront today. Pivket Spread Predicted. Kxtenslon of the picketing to the Northern ports of the Pacific coast was predicted by members of the league following the receipt of a mes sage from New York to the effect that a vigorous campaign Is to be Rotten under way. Plans for a boy cott of all British goods in line with the boycott campaign mapped out in New York, together with a movement against Industries in California con trolled by British Interests, are under consideration, it was intimated. The pickets made their appearance along the waterfront at 7 o'clock this morning and for two hours paraded the Embarcadero. In addition to their appeal by banners ind by word of mouth to stevedores on specific tasks, tbey made a special appeal to the longshoremen at work. They left the waterfront at 9 o'clock, returning nt 11:30 for two hours more of picket ing. New Rannrra Seen. In addition to the original banners carried during yesterday's demon stration two new banners were in evidence. They read: "Will you help send food to Eng land while they starve the Irish in their jails?" "The Irish republic is the only labor government west of Russia. Will you help kill it?" The Muncaster Castle was the only1 British vessel in port yesterday. She completed her coaling yesterday aft ernoon and steamed for Hongkong. Her coaling was completed by her crew, it was said. Ll.it of Colleena Given. The picketing is not expected to be a daily incident. It will start auto matically with the arrival in port of a British boat and every effort will be made to induce the stevedores to refuse to coal or load the vessel, it was stated. Australian. New Zealand and Canadian ships will not come under the ban except when they are boifnd for Kngllsh ports, San Fran cisco pickets stated yesterday. The pickets today, according to an announcement from headquarters of the Women's lrisft Educational league, included Misses Minnie Mc Carthy, Rita M c I n e r n y, Eileen O'Brien. Mary and Peggy O'Connor, Nellie Reidy, Margaret Quessy, Eileen and Anna Hlckey, Kathleen Fitzsim mons. Sheila Dennehy, Mary Crosson. Mrs. M. A. (Special Cable.) A Constantinople despatch to the Daily Telegraph reads: "Confirmation of the rumor of the 'nationalization' of women by the bolshevik! is now provided by the nar rative of a British officer who re cently escaped from Odessa. This terrible course is exacted from the in habitants of Moscow, Kieff and Odessa, and the officer cites the cases of 12 women in the latter town who com mitted suicide or were shot by rela tives rather than submit to the un speakable outrage. "He also says that on ore occasion he traveled down with 1500 women who were returning from Kieff to Odessa, after three months of this slavery and gives a terrible descrip tion of their condition. "This wholesale deportation of women to certain centers is enforced in ail three towns mentioned, but the iniquity is worsen Odessa than else where." .DAIXY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. Sept. 9.
