VOLCANIC-ASH ROCK OF OREGON IS VALUABLE Great Quarry Within Few Miles of Prairie City Furnishes Durable and Fireproof, Yet Easily Worked Building Material of Good Colors. If ' ' - ww'fc , - f " !? ,1 4 0fc BY ORLOP DODD. THE rock sharps who lor a halt century or more have studied more or less critically the formation known locally as the Strawberry Range or the Blue Mountains, with its singu larly beautiful valleys, laughing crys- in bu earns ana cnarming scenery, are practically a unit in the opinion that it is tne result of volcanic asrencv and that the titanic upheaval that gave it birth is of very recent date as dates . are reckoned in geologic time; so recent indeed as to have occurred within the aee of man. Throughout the John Day Valley evidences of recent volcanic ac tivity are everywhere abundant. The mantle rock at the base of the moun tains is scant and narrow. In some eections it has not yet extended to the bench lands, and the hardened volcanic mud and detritus lies bare on the sur face, while everywhere in the moun tains and in the valleys the exposed rocks are yet sharp and iaeieii. as though the mighty forces that thrust tnem vertically through the earth's crust had operated but yesterday. In many localities implements and weapons of the stone age are remark ably abundant, in some instances lying on the surface of small areas that were evidently left undisturbed, except as to uplift, by the cataclysm, and over which the mighty rain of rock, pumice stone, mud and volcanic ash failed to fall. Ah Cumpreaaed Into Rock. In other sections, where waterspouts of recent years have gashed the foot hills, these implements and weapons of stone-age man have been uncovered at various depths. A remarkable fea . ture of the volcanic activity of the period was the prodigious amount of ash ejected from the fiery throats of the hundreds of blazing craters. A few miles from Prairie City is a locally famous quarry from which a number of the largest buildings of the town have been constructed. It is a quarry of volcanic ash which has been compressed into rock since its ejection from the lower strata of the earth's crust. As 1o how this particular quarry came to be rock, while the vast bulk of the ash thrown out has become the fertile soil of the valley and foothills contiguous to It, Is an interesting problem. The volcanic ash rock quarry covers an area of more than a square mile, and is probably more than 100 to 150 feet in depth, and is everywhere, so far as yet developed, of the same structure and consistency an unstratified and un broken mass of soft rock. Evidentlv the place where it lies was, prior to the eruption, a lake into which the ash fell, filling it to the brim and forcing the water by overflow Into the valley at its base. This body of ash, saturated with the water into which it fell and hemmed in by the rock margin of the ancient lake hardened through the suc ceeding centuries into Its present con dition. Thta rock, soft and readily workable as It Is. Is practically fire proor. at. it contains a large amount cf asbestos. Rock Fireproof and Durable. The rock Is a pleasing gray In color. slightly mottled with yellow blotches, and the buildings constructed of it are attractive In appearance. This singular volcanic rock is not only fireproof, but Is otherwise remarkably durable, being absolutely Impervious to all weathering agencies. One of the store buildings in trairie City built of this rock more than 40 years ago, today shows all tho etchings of the mason's tools as clearly defined as they were when first laid In the wail, and this in the face of the fact that the rock Is extremely soft in texture, softer, indeed, than any known Sandstone. Another and singular feature of this volcanic ash rock, and one that adds much to its value and availability as a building material. Is its comparative lightness of weight. Its two features, both rare In rock structure, lightness - r urninn 1 1 1 m i mmm'BkaammvStSisistt " urn ff -f 4 ' S V - ''V j ! IIS L IIP r ; it " f it .V" y 5T.'9WWWf" in weight and softness of texture. coupled with its remarkable durability in tne open, make it an exceptionally valuable building material. It is esti mated by practical builders that Its cost laid In the wall Is less than lumber in this timber-favored section, where lumber mills are common. Supply Kxtreniely Laree. As to the quantity of this rock in this one quarry, it has been stated by a contractor here that there Is enough of it to build a large city, and there is no question that this statement is an extremely conservative one. In the divine economy of the world's mastery and settlement by man, when all its richness of material and soil and climate Is considered, it would seem that Oregon has been set apart in tne eternal plan as the housing place of the final product of a race that through the ages has at last mastered the secrets and forces of his world; of a race that has attained an intellectual power that entitles it to a resting place worthy of its development, and where it may build homes and foster a life and civilization commensurate with its physical and mental powers. MEN OF NAVY ACCUSED SOCIALISTS SAY KIOT AVAS PLAXXliU ABOARD SHIP3. Seattle Resolutions Say Man in Uni form of Army Major Encour aged' AVork. or Destruction. SEATTLE, Aug-. 3. A mass meeting of the moderate Socialists, whose head quarters were destroyed by rioting United States soldiers and sailors the night of July 18, today adopted reso lutions demanding a Congressional In vestigation of the riot. The speakers were gentle in their criticism of Secre tary of the Navy Daniels. The resolu tions say that at a "most propitious moment, from the standpoint of the reactionaries, the Secretary of the Navy. Josephus Daniels, delivered a tactless. Impolitic and bellicose attack upon the red flag and all those who be lieve in the principles it symbolizes, thus lending the color of official appro bation to the work of arson which al most immediately followed." "Sworn testimony is at hand," the resolutions say, "indicating that the riot was planned and organized" on board the ships of the fleet and at tne forts with the foreknowledge and pas sive connivance of those In authority, and one man, wearing the uniform of a Major of the United States Army, stood in an automobile near the scene of de struction and openly cheered, applaud ed and encouraged the work of arson, using the words: 'Good work, boys; good work." " The resolutions, therefore, demand a Congressional investigation. PRUNE TREES SPLITTING Great Fruit Harvest Predicted in Polk Couuty. R1CKREAI..U Or.. Aug. 3. (Spe cial.) Owing to the sire and quantity of the prunes in Polk County's or chards, many trees have split from the weight. This is considered early for prune trees to suffer this way, but the fruit has developed wonderfully within the past two weeks. It is believed that by harvest time the prunes will be of a greater size than heretofore- T I r I I T lltb and Slorrison - Main 1 and A 1122 TONIGHT 8:30 EVLls SPECIAr. PKICR MATISEES WED. IKI SAT.
