IHE MOKMAG OKJKGOXIAX, MONDAY, SEPTE3IBER 1G. 1913. NEW CROP .CHEHALIS GROWS CTCCMBERS FOR PICKLING PLANT. Twenty-three Acres of Cabbage Is Thriving and Sauer Kraut Will Be Manufactured for Sale. CHEHALIS. Wash.. Sept. 15. (Spe cial.) Growing cucumbers for pickling is llkelv to assume an important place in this section of the state' as a result of this year's experiment on the part of a Tacoma firm. On the Chehalis Valley farm of J. T. Alexander. 43 acres of land were leased for this pur pose. Last Spring- 20 acres were planted to cucumbers and 23 to cabbage. The cucumbers will be used in making pickles and the cabbage will be worked up Into a brand of sauer kraut that is expected to make Lewis County noted. The land used at the pickle farm is fertile river bottom which overflows each winter and has annually benefitted from sediment washed down the valley. However, to make results certain com mercial fertiliser was generously used - and an Immense crop of cucumbers is being gathered. Harvesting has been going on for several weeks and results come up to the highest expectations. A large -force of men is kept busy working overtime on the 20-acre patch and. owing to scarcity of help avail able, there are times when the small cucumbers come on so rapidly that the pickers can hardly keep up with the crop. The yield has been something enormous, but until the frost comes later and puts the vines out oi com mission the vleld will be unknown. The cucumbers are picked int6 sacks. They are separated according to size, as different uses are made of them. The smaller ones are packed In barrels ana shipped to the factory of the pickling company at Tacoma, where they are put up as either sweet or sour pickles. The larger sizes are taken care of here and worked into dill pickles. A smaii patch of dill is growing near the cu cumber patch .to provide the dill for this purpose. The dill pickles will be : sold from here. The laige size cucum bers will be cut up for use In making chow-chow and other relishes. Harvesting of the 23 acres of cab bage will not begin for some time yet. Most of this crop shops splendid growth and it will continue to grow for weeks yet. W00DBURN CROPS LARGE Grain Better Than Expected, Hops and Potatoes Plentiful. WOODBUKN. Or.. Sept. 15. (Spe cial.) With Summer weather prevail ing during the past week, farmers have exerted every effort to house their crops and find the damage much lighter than expected. Outside of being some what discolored, Spring grain is turn ing out good, with a few exceptions, where the bundles have been neglected. In many instances, farmers are much surprised-to find that the dry weather has brought out their crops in nearly as good condition as before the rains. Threshing has been crowded, but at least a week or ten days of fine weather is necessary to complete operations. Some heavy yields of grain are re ported, among which is that of F. W. Settlemier, who reports 100 bushels of oats to the acre. Some wheat will not be fit for milling purposes, but in most cases will make excellent chicken feed which Is in good demand. The hop crop is practically all housed in this section, and is fully up to average both as to quantity and quality, even thou eh a few yards were damaged; by mould. The -quantity is estimated at about 25 per cent in ex cess of last season and not to exceed 10 per cent Is damaged by mould. Potato growers are commencing dig ging and several crops have been sold during the past week on the basis of 50 cents a hundredweight. Reports show the yield to be heavy, running all the way from 150 to 300 bushels to the acre, and even at the present low prices, will net the growers satisfac tory returns. INDIANS TO THRESH GRAIN Third Sawmill Will Be Built on Klamath Reservation. KLAMATH FALLS, Or.. Sept. 15. (Special.) Edson Watson. Indian Agent, has purchased a steam thresh ing outfit for the Klamath Reserva tion. There are several antiquated threshing outfits on the reservation now. but the progress of the Indians In agriculture calls for more modern methods and Mr. Watson is helping them in that direction. He hopes to have the outfit here In time to do much of this season's work. A third sawmill will soon be in operation on the reservation, aa the two now in use are proving insuffi cient to meet the demand. The new mill will be located on Sprague River between iVRiJiaxn und the Agency and will be manned by Indians. An advertisement for the sale of 1.500,000 feet, board measure, standing timber, on the reservation, announces that bids will be opened October 15. The minimum figure for pine and su gar pine, which constitute three fourths of the timber to be sold. Is 33.25 a thousand feet. On the re mainder of the timber the minimum Is 31.60 a thousand. The agent has a number of offers for timber, one of which is for 400.000.000 feet. PRUNE TREE STOCK SHORT Nurseries Vnable to Supply Demands or Prospective Planters. AURORA, Or., Sept. 15. (Special.) Charles J. Roth, the Canby nuresery man. has been in Aurora this week on business, and he says there is a re markable shortage in the supply of prune trees in the Pacific Coast nur series this Fall.. Practically every nur sery In Oregon has exhausted its sup ply already, for the Fall planting, which means that there will be no more trees on the market for a year. This Indicates a remarkably heavy planting and a great revival of Interest in the prune industry. Mr. Roth has ,Just received an order for 5000 trees; but could supply only 500. The larger part of the orders seem to come from California, where- the plant ing is the heaviest and the interest greatest. In this particular section, the great est activity in horticulture, is in lo ganberries, there being hundreds of acres planted between here and Salem. Many apples, pear, and peaches will also be put out this Fall in the Fargo neighborhood. ORCHARD TRACTS SELLING Idaho Buyers Snap Vp Small Parcels of Land at Hermislon. HERMISTON. Or., Sept. 15 (Spe cial.) W. H. Skinner, who owns 1000 acres adjoining town and has platted 320 acres Into five-acre tracts that he is selling under contract to deliver 5-year-old orchards, has recently made several sales to Idaho buyers. Maurice Scroggs has sold 20 acres in alfalfa and fruit trees to J. Thorns, of Wardner, and the Seiwert 20-acre or- AMTSEMENTS.
