Girls' Hall Association of Sunnyside will seoure possession of the Boys' Brigade property on &ast Yamhill, be tween Kast Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth streets some time this -week. Charlen Lennon, member of the committee having the transfer in hand, said yesterday that the contract for securing the prop erty had been prepared and would be elgned up with W. O. Nisly at once. Mr. Lennon said about J1000 had been sub scribed, but that $600 more would be needed to pay for the property and secure title. He is anxious to complete the trans action. Mr. Lennon eaid that the property would be held for the benefit of the boys and girls of Sunnyside. One of the projects is to establish a branch library in the building. Mission Cibcle Meets Todat. The regular monthly meeting of the Florence Meade Mission Circle will be held in the parlor of the Unlvensalist Church of Good Tidings, at Broadway and Eaet Twenty-fourth street Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. "Women of the Univer salis! Church and Their Achievements" will be the topic. Mrs. N. J. Lottritz will read the opening paper., Thursday eve-, ning new members will be received and the Lord's Supper will be observed. Easter morning at 7:30 o'clock sunrise services under the care of the young people will be held. The regular Easter services will be especially attractive. They will be held In the new auditorium. A special musical programme has been prepared for both services. Competitive Bids to Be Asked. Hol laday Park Improvement Association will ask that competitive bids be opened on pavements for that district, and aUjo that the city own and operate a muni cipal rock crusher plant in order to re duce the cost of street work. The club also will circulate a remonstrance against the use of Hassam pavement in that dis trict. The club will undertake to have another bridge across Sullivans Gulch built at East Twenty-flret street, which is midway between East Twelfth and Twenty-eighth streets. where bridges have been provided for. Xorth of Sullivans Gulch is a large settlement and it is urged that another bridge is needed at that point. Bishop Bell Due Tuesdat. William Bell, of Berkeley, Cal., bishop of the United Brethren Church, will arrive In Portland next Tuesday to take part in She laymen's convention. Next Monday the bishop will deliver a lecture in Philomath followed by a banquet, which will be attended by many of the leading ministers and members of the United Brethren churches of the state. The ban quet will be In the nature of a conference of the leaders of the church. Bishop Bell will be in Portland three days, and will then go to Seattle to attend a laymen's convention. He will be accompanied by Rev. H. C. Shaffer, of this city. Mother of Twins Dies. Mrs. Marie A. Smith, wife of William L. Smith, died at .her home. 627 East Salmon etreet, March 22. aged 24 years. Mrs. Smith leaves a little boy and daughter born about one week ago. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Faber, living at Mount Tabor, are her parents. The funeral will be held this morning, at the family residence, at 2 o'clock and at St. Francis Church, East Eleventh and Oak streets. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Church. State Doctors to Meet. Members of the State Board of Health will hold their quarterly meeting in the office of their secretary. Dr. Calvin White, on the fifth floor of the Dekum building, next Friday. Among the more important features of the meeting will be discussions concerning the unsanitary water supply of the smaller towns and also plans will be taken up for limiting the spread of infectious diseases. Government Inspection of the Van couver Ferry. Owing to the inspection of the Vancouver ferry by the United States Inspectors of Steam Vessels on Thursday. March 24, 1M0, the Vancouver cars, leaving Portland at 7:25. 8. 8:35. 9:10. :S0, 10:30. 11:10 and 11:50 A. M., will not connect with the ferryboat. It is expected that through service to Vancouver will be. resumed, leaving Portland at 12:30 P. M. The an nual meeting of the Grand-Avenue United Presbyterian Church will be held tonight to elect members of the boards of trus tees and elders, and transact such other business as may come up. Albert Klein. A. Friedman and A. E. Koessel. each engaged in the retail meat business, were taken before the Justice Court yesterday afternoon on charges of selling adulterated lard. It is announced that the rights of way for the extension have been secured except through a small lot, and that it may be necessary to condemn the property. The route follows the contour of the bluff above the Willamette south from Ellsworth street to a connection with Milwaukie street, which has been made a street to the city limits at Sell wood. This extension will open a street through Brooklyn on the high ground and will furnish an outlet for the South East Side now depending on Milwaukie street. It ..will make Grand avenue a through thoroughfare extending practical ly from the south to the north. Minneapolis Man Dies Here. EHery C. Holliday. aged 60 years, lt7 Sixteenth street, died suddenly yesterday at 10:30 o'clock. Death was due to heart failure. Tuesday Mr. Holliday was at his office, though complaining of pains in his chest. He came to Portland one year ago front Minneapolis, where he. had lived many years. There he was ' engaged in the real estate business and during his resi dence here was associated with Joseph C. Gibson in that business in the Gerlinger builcinf?1. With him at the time of death were Dr. A. W. Moore, -the family physi cian, his wife and two daughters. Court land Holliday, an only son, lives here. The funeral arrangements have not .been made. Sneak Thief os Rockpile. John Bolick, professional sneak thief, was sentenced yesterday by Municipal Judge Bennett to spend 60 days on the rockpile as the result of his operations in this city. He was caught w-hile attempting to enter a room in the Oregon Hotel recently. When searched, Bolick was found to have a gold watch belonging to a man named Parker, stolen last October. Bolick, it is said, has been staying at -the Socialistic headquarters lately. At the, end of his present sentence he may be prosecuted for the theft. of the watoh.'l , , Plan Is to Save Girls. Mrs. Sarah Northrup gave an interesting, talk at Central W. C T. U. yesterday, on "What Should We Do With the Wilful Girl?" She spoke of the many temptations to the modern girl, not the least of which Is the social wine cup. She gave several experiences from her own observation as a nurse. There will be an all-day prayer service April 5. at the Centenary' Metho dist Episcopal Church, in charge of Mrs. Neal Inman. Mbadb Mission Circl.fi Meets. The Florence Meade Mission Circle will .hold a meeting this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in the parlors of the First Universalist Church. East Twenty-fourth and Broad way streets. "The Women of the Uni versalist Church" will be the topic. Mrs. Nellie J. Loritz will read the opening paper. In the evening a service will be conducted by the pastor. Rev. James D. Corby, and new members will be re ceived into the church. O. N. G. to Muster on Friday. The quarterly muster. Inspection and public drill of Battery A, Field Artillery, Ore gon National Guard, will be held Friday night, at the Armory, under direction of the battery commanding officer. Captain H. U. Welch. .The .maneuvers will con sist of firing some of the new heavy fieldguns with -blank charges and other work. The public is invited. Church Will Be Opened. The Third United Brethren Church, located in South Mount Tabor district, will be opened and occupied next Sunday morning, when Rev. H. C. Shaffer will deliver the sermon. It had been expected that Bishop William iBell would be present and dedicate the church, but he will not reach Portland until next Tuesday morning. Dedication will not be hold for the present.
