PAST CHANCELLORS VOTE 5Ivtn More Than Mere Right to Be Heard In State Meetings Port land Gets the Next Annual Convention. Th Knights of Pj-thlas at the Grand Lodge meeting yesterday morning made two Important amendments to the statutes of the lodge. The first has to do with membership in the larger lodges, while the second again confers upon past grand chancellors the right to vote In Grand Lodge sessions. As the statute stood before the change they were al lowed to speak at these meetings, but not to vote. Formerly each lodge, with out regard to size, was allowed two rep resentatives, but the amendment pro vides for larger representation from the larger bodies. . provided the delegation shall not exceed five. At 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon a pa rade of the uniform -rank escorting the officers and members of" the Grand Lodge and Grand Temple of Pythian 8t ters was held. The formation was as follows: Platoon of mounted police. Brown's Military Band, General Akin and staff, members of the uniform rank, supreme representatives and Grand Lodge officers K. of P., supreme repre sentatives and Grand Lodge officers of the Pythian Sisters, members of the -Grand and subordinate lodges. At 3 o'clock the drill of the uniform rank was held at the Armory in which MeMinnville and Hubbard, the Tenth and Seventeenth Companies Knights of Pythias of Oregon.- participated. Foot movements and sword drill were Included In the contest, the first prize of $100 being won by the Hubbard Company, and the second prize of $50 by the MeMinn ville Company. Major Dunbar and Cap tain Wilson, of the O. N. G., acted as Judges. Competitive Drill Today. The competitive drill for the solid illver trophy cup .offered by the Grand Lodge will be held at 2 o'clock this ifternoon. As the Elgin lodge was obliged to leave last night It put on its ritualistic work yesterday afternoon. Pendleton and Seaside lodges will put on :helr work today. Last night an entertainment, dance and banquet was given the Grand Lodge by Cvanhoe Lodge, No. 1, at the hall. Eleventh and Alder streets. In addition to the competitive drill the ;lme today will be occupied with bus .ness sessions, which will close at a late Sour with the installation of officers. Mrs. Elizabeth Dunning, of Portland, was elected grand chief of the Pythian Sisters yesterday morning to succeed VIrs. f Laura Hoogkirk, of Rainier. United Artisans' .Hall, in the Abington building, was the scene of the morning and afternoon sessions of the Pythian Sisters, at which there was a large at tendance. In . addition to the routine business numerous reports of committees were received and acted upon. The ses sions closed last night. New Officers Chosen. Officers as elected for the ensuing year are as follows: Grand chief, Mrs. Eliza beth Dunning, of Portland: grand senior, Mrs. Ida Harris, of St. Helens; grand junior, Inez R. Chase, of Coquille; grand manager, Margaret Slocum, of Union; grand mistress of records and seals, Mary R. Hocue. of Klamath Falls; grand M. of F., Nora Narnett, of Port land; grand protector, Elizabeth Stln son, of Salem; grand guard, Mae Gevurtz, of Portland; grand trustees. Mrs. Sarah Hoehstedler, of Portland, and Emma Snyder, of Aurora; supreme representative. Lilly B. Brock, of Hood River; alternate supreme representative, Miriam B. Brooke, of Portland. Yesterday Mrs. Cora M. Davis and Mrsl Susie Parmenter. representatives from Oregon to the last Supreme Tem ple, submitted' their reports. In the afternoon the newly-elected officers were formally installed. The Grand Temple presented the retiring grand chief, Mrs. Laura M. Hoogkirk. with a cut-glass set. ELECT DELEGATES TONIGHT Grace M. K. Church Will Choose Two Conference Representatives. . A general conference on a small scale will be held at the Graco Methodist Church at 7:30 o'clock tonight, when the choice of the church will be expressed as to what two delegates shall represent it at the next general conference to be .held at Baltimore, Md In May. Special Interest centers in the gathering tonight, as it Is expected that the annual con ference of Oregon Methodist Churches, to be held at the Grace Church, September 20. will confirm' the action of the church. Five-minute speeches by laymen will be a feature of the programme tonight with subjects as follows: Dr. Osmon Royal, "Our Advocate": Scott Bozarth, "Our University"; Dr. Richmond Kelly, 'Diocesan Episcopacy"; John Corkish, Elective Presiding Elders"; HL'T. John son. "Pastoral Time Limit"; M. B. Rankin. "How to Make Your Pastor Succeed": F. S. Aikin. "How a Layman Can Help the Church"; George J. Kirk land. "Support of the Local Church"; J. K. Gill, "The Amusement Question." ' The ballot will be taken after the speeches. STILL PROBING COMBINE Federal Grand Jury Xot Done With Furniture Men. "It "beRins to look as If we had an all Siimnier job of It." said a member of the .-'tderal jury, following yesterday's ad iournment of that body. The entire day das spent probing the alleged furniture rust, and there are many other witnesses it 111 to be heard. So far only retail deal ers and jobbers, who claim to have suf lered by the operations of ' the combine, nave appeared before the Jury. The pro gramme seems to be to complete this fea iure of the task first before calling any of the members of the alleged trust. With a number of other witnesses sum noned by the Government yet to be heard nd the probability that the- furniture magnate- may be given an inning, it la reasonably certain that all of the week will be required to finish the case.
