Jan. 1. liquidation in the wheat pit became general about the middle of the cs(on and the market was aubjected to considerable pressure during the remainder of the day. The early mark: waa steady be cause of a good demand by commission houses. Shi pmen t a from A rjeen t lna for the week were libe-al at 1.806,000 buhela. against 64O.O00 btwhols toft year, but this was offset by the continued small receipts at Minneapolis' and I.ututh. Other factors responsible for the sH I n k were a rfrort by a St. Ixulu trade Journal that the Fall-sown crop l far advanced, and the gmanne?s of weekly export?. Both local and outr-ide Ion sold freely during the last hour, ulTcrlnga being tnltfn mainly by commis sion houses. Tho market closed easy. A WELL-ORGANIZED DRIVE Disastrous Slump Threatens in St. fflUlj HftirlJnans, Hills, Kea- ins and Amalgamated The Closing; Is Feverish. NEW YORK. Jan. 18. Clouds of depres- BiOn gathered over the stock market to day, ani the weakness, vhlch Ms been spotty and Intermittent hitherto, became senersvi and acute. This was a result, rat nor of m crystallization or sentiment on cur rent topics of discussion than ot a present 'actor In the situation. Moreover, it became very evident that ara-- activities were .traceable to a profes sional party of operators on the bear side of the market. This party showed every evidence of skillful organization and ag- gressive leadership, and there was a gen eral disposition to attribute its general sh lp to a veteran operator whose activities have been dormant for a considerable period, so far as public information naa rouowea them. The bold methods pursued by the n,.wly-ori?anized party are shown by tha widespread proclamation made before the opening: of trading of the plans for the day. including special pressure to be directed against United States Steel and Union Pa cific. It was explained, however, that this plan of strategy was intended to be di rected against what seemed to be the Port Arthur of the market, with a view to se curing the key to tlie position. This figurative explanation la based upon the comparative firmness with which those stocics have resisted the general weak ness heretofore and the sympathetic effect this had fyad in sustaining the general mar ket. While professional short selling was clearly traceable In the day's market. the vulnerability of values confirmed th views of the bears and proved the existence of conamons on which they . oasea the at tack. Instead of encountering opposition or effective support for securities) at tached, the fall In prices Intensified the pressure of the liquidation and gave much ot it the appearance of urgency which al ways gives currency to rumors of financial stress about th Stock Exchange. The estimates of the week's currency movement emphasized the crowlnc ease of the money situation, with an Indicated cash gain or 514.0W.OOO. but sentiment in the stock market Is formed to the belief that the accumulation of money resources at tlhs time is not to be for the benefit of marKei speculation, but is likely to be ppoken as fast as available to take care ot the enormouB issues of new capital. The terms on which the new canltal Is to h of- ier?a lor su oscript ion will assure an traction to privileged subscribers, such stockholders, at least, which Is calculated to outweigh the advantages offered by any of the securities now in the open market. Stocks enjoyed one good rally in the af ternoon, when shorts took profits and re duced their lines, but another determined drive against the market dislodged heavy stop loss orders and caused a threatening stump in et. paui. tne Harrimano, the Hills. Iteading and Amalgamated Copper. The clouiiiK- was In consequence much, unsettled and feverishly active. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value. $2,477,000.
