THIS MOKNINU- ,OKiSG03SriA-N, 'TUESDAY, DECEMBER .23, 1902. 13 r HOP MARKET DULL Little Business Looked For Until After Holidays, PRICES IN GERMANY STRONG Advance Tkere Due to Light Supplies Views at A. J. tay on Sit uatloa Locally and 'Abroad. The hop market is veipr dull, and no business Of Importance can be looked for until after the holidays. Buyers are hardly In the market, nor are growers, either, for that matter. They are under no pressure to sell, and concessions cannot be secured to. any marked extent. Prices are nominally unchanged. "The recent advance In the German market," said A. J. Kay, a well-known hopman, yes terday, "Is undoubtedly due to the fact that the Germans have exported the bulk of .their hops, leaving their home market In much bet ter condition. The strength of values is purely ..local with them. The came cause has led to the present .dullness and weakness of the Lon don and New York markets. London has taken 40,000 baled of Germ m hops, and is in no pressing need to buy Pacific Coasts. New York has also bought heavily of Germans, and, on the other hand, exported but few more Amer icans than last year." Mr. Ray's figures on the Imports and exports of New York are as follows, the imports being in German bales: Bales. Imports ip date... Imports, same period 1001. .......... Exports to date Exports, same period 1001 4.750 . 1.600 17.500 10.200 "I look for a decline of lc or 2c in the next 80 or 40 days," said Mr. Bay, "and a revival later In the Spring that will carry the market up to the present basis. While there have been 47,500 bales of Oregon hops shipped to date, there is still a large quantity in first hands. The unsold stock of Oregons amounts to 16,000 bales, .and of Californlans 17,000 bales,, against 8500 bales at this date last year. My advices are that the New York market is dull and drooping, with many lots ottered at 26ff27c" New York Hop Market. NEW YORK, Dec 22. (Special.) Locally hops continue dull and trading light. German cables report an active movement, with air vances of from 5 to 10 marks. The advancing tendency is due to light stocks. PRUNES IN THE EAST. Good Jobbing: Demand for OregroBa Values Continnc Strong:. NEW YORK. Dec 22. Supplies of prunes were further increased today by the arrival of 10,000 boxes. The demand shows a slight fall ing off. but in the main the position of values is unchanged. -Of the receipts 8000 boxes go to outside markets, mostly on sales made while goods were In transit. The rest come mostly to Jobbers, who show no anxiety to press sales. A few lets to brokers offer a shade under the Quoted basis on 40s to 80s. The last sales were at 7c for 40-50s, 0c for 50-SOs, 6c for 60-70s, and 4c for 70-80s In 25-pound boxes, these values being c under regular jobbing quotations. A quiet Interest Is looked for until the end of the holidays, but the position is looked upon as strong, in. view of the. firmness noted or. the Coast in late wires. " " ' Oregon prunes continue In good jobbing de mand, and late today a sale of 30r40s in tran sit was reported at 7Uc In 25-pound boxes. Some export business has been put through on 30s to 50s In transit xom the Coast at full values. Arrivals today for export were 46,000 boxes, all descriptions. Beans and salmon are quiet and unchanged. CHRISTMAS POULTRY. Tarlceys Selling "Well at Higher Prices Chickens Weaker. There is still some uncertalny as to what turkeys should sell at on Front street. Live turkeys were quoted at from 17c to 18c, and dresB.ed as high as 22c The supply was limited,- bo the high price did not interfere with business. Some dealers believe there will not be eneugh to go around, others are satisfied they will have all they can sell. Chickens are not moving well. Receipts are large, and quo tations are down to 0c and 10c There Is a good Inquiry for ducks, .and geese also eel! well, both at advanced prices. Norway's Fish Trade. United States Consul V. E. Nelson, at Berg en, writes to the State Department: The commercial relations between the north ern ports of Norway and Russia have been eteadlly Increasing, In uplte of the Insufficient means of communication hitherto existing; but as the Ofoten Railroad and the Swedish main line have now been opened, traffic will become still more considerable, Russia Is already a good customer for Norwegian fish. Now as the Ofoten Railroad the "most northern in the world has been opened, the fish consumed In Russia (which may be more than the Norwe gian market can supply) will, of course, be for warded by rail; consequently, the shipments of dried fish will decrease as" the export of fresh fish proves profitable. The prices of Lofoten cod were so high this year that the dry-flsh producers had poor returns. It Is -also expected that frozen flsh will be sent fem Norvlk to the northern provinces of Sweden, and prepara tions are being made to carry on this business on a large scale. Rock Salt Mine in Belgium. Consul G. W. Roosevelt "writes from Brussels, under date of November 20. 1DC2: According to a communication to the Society of Archaeology of Brussels, recent borings near Eeerlngen have resulted In the discovery of a mine of rock salt at a depth ofsabout 3000 feet. This is expected to add greatly to the commercial wealth of the country. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain. Flour. Good Basiness in" the Exchange and Prices Show Strength and Breadth f Movement Vn Sugar. NEW YORK. Dec 22. There was good volume of business In ..stocks today, and the market showed strength and breadth. The, large dealings and the notable strength Jin- & few sromlnenj; securities had a -notable -sympathetic effect on the wnole market. The trad ing showed diminished anlniatloh as the day progressed, but the high level 'of prices at tained was pretty well held, although the clos ing was slightly Irregular by reason of a. fe verish movement in Sugar. The stocks which led the market had individual grounds for strength, mostly in the shape of rumors of a probable Increase In dividends or of other bene fits. This was the case In Missouri Pacific, New York Central and In the outside marker. The rumor concerning Northern Securities was to the effect t&athere is to be .some ex traordinary distribution tapping Great North ern stockholders, of which the Northern Se curities Company is the principal one. No official sanction was given to any of these rumors, nor was there any confirmation of the. reports lhat valuable rights are to bo given to St. Paul stockholders In connection with the proposed stock Issue. Sugar's -strength was attributed to a further drive against the shorts In connection with the prospects for the Cuban reciprocity treaty. Canadian Pacific and Its al lied stocks were strong features, without spe cial explanation. Amalgamated Copper was helped by reports that copper litigation In Montana has been postponed Indefinitely by common consent of both contending Interests in the Industry. The room traders on the stock exchanges were somewhat skeptical of the advance, and con tested It by short sales. There was evidence of activity on the part of the recently quies cent . pools, and large professional operators wero supposed to be at work to lift the level of prices. United States Steel was prominent and strong, although somewhat sluggish, as usual. Satisfaction was expressed over the status of the Venezuela . situation, and con fidence seemed to be felt In the money situa tion. Concessions In rate for. time loans helped this confidence materially. The 6 per cent rate was shaded for any longer than CO days. A feature of the day -was trading In International Mercantile common stock in the outside mar ket at from 15 to 21. This Is the first recorded business In this country In the new shipping company common stock. The "bond market was broad- and strongt To tal sales, .$3,030,000. United States bonds wero all unchanged on the last call. New York Stock Market. 'STOCKS.
