THE MORNING GREGOKIAN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1902. at SEPTEMBER WHEAT DROPS EFFECT OP ,BIlEA3C-irKcdSlX6l . A STROXG MARKET. Bullish Croyvil Acts Cndc Beulik News, un& .Crop Advtcea Cause Loss of-Early Gains. CHICAGO. Aug. 7. There was a desire to cover- short contracts -In corn by yesterday's sellers at the" opening, and on a fair' support by a ble house and scanty arrivals, prices showed good rains. Th pit crowd Tor a time acted very bullish under the lead of the crowd that bulled July stuff. News, however, was generally bearish. Cables were lower and tho weather was perfect. The feeling throughout tho pit was that much of the artificial" ft trength had been' hammered out of corn, and In splto of the continual slump that tho crowd was overselling the market. Septembpr closed weak, IQlc down, at 53SJ53c. The break In corn near tho close worked against an otherwise strong "Wheat market. The sympathetic selling was not heavy! but as the support fell off and excellent crop advices camo to hand, the good -early gains vrtke lost. The cash situation "Was excellent. The fair-sized short interest in the market and very steady, cobles helped In the upturn. September opened !4c down to un changed, at CS516C&C. and advanced to C9c "When corn broke, September wheat dipped to 6SHc, and closed casy,'&Hc down, at CS Oats ruled very steady untl the corn break. September closed easy, MSfM,c down, at 31 4 c Provisions were . depressed early. Pork was wanted, however, and on the packers support there was a good advance until grains broke. The close was weak, with September pork 7fcc down, lard 10c off .and ribs 13c lower. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Ornlntr. Htgheat. Lnwl. Closlnc. IS MORGAN BEHIND IT? RISE IS L. STOCKS COUPLED "WITH THE FINANCIER'S NA3EE. Hocking Valley Also Jnmps Upward, With No Development to Explain the Movement. NEW YORK. Auk. 7. There was a further expansion In the volume of trading in stocks today, and the same kind of irregular strength which was shown yesterday. V There were points of weakness in the market. In spite or. the marked strength of the -roost conspicuous stocks, and there was a still larger number of important stocks which did not respond to the advance and were simply dull and ng leetMi thramrhont thta session. There were vio lent movements In some usually obscure stocks. but in some also which are always active ana prominent, thejrices fluctuated half or a full point oetween transactions. 11 iook bui i transactions to lift Burlington. Cedar Rapids & Northern 15 point?, following a 65 point rise of yesterday. This was the result of the an nouncement by the protective committee of tho minority stockholders that- they naa se cured an offer of a high price for the out standing minority stock unassentlng to the plan of exchange with Rock Island. Other controlled stocks which seemed to. be affected in sympathy were- Nashville, and Chattanooga & St. Louis, tb Nanawha & Mlehlgan and the New York. Chicago & St. Louis stocks. Tho Hocking Valley stocks and Louisville & Nashville moved upward with almost equal violence, but with no specific development to explain the move. The rise in Illinois Central had in its favor excellent reports of gross earnings for July and net earnings fcr June. The unusual strength and activity of Louis ville & Nashville shares today gave rise to & variety of rumors, tho1 substance of which was that the trouble which grew out of the at tempt tt corner the. stock last Spring had been settled In a way satisfactory to all con cerned. These rumors were confirmed in part by persons in authority, but nothing Ilka a definite statement on the subject was obtain able. August Belmont, chairman of the Louls- villo & Nashville road, and Samuel Spencer, president of the Southern Railway, conferred with representatives of J. P. Morgan & Co. during tho day. and the return to town of John W. Gates, coupled with his protracted visit to Morgan & Co.'s ofllcf, were regarded as of more than passing importance. The story most persistently circulated was that Morgan & Co.. who are believed to hold 150,- 000 shares of Louisville & Nashville, for which they paid about 130, according to re port, havo agreed to buy tho Harris-Gates holdings, estimated at some like 200,000 shares, for 150. Questioned on this point, a member of the Morgan Arm said: "We are not in a position to say anything about Loulsvlllo & Nashville, but there are no differences and there will be none." Coincident with the movement In Loulsvlllo & Nashville, was the sharp rise In Illinois Central, Hocking Valley issues and Nashville & Chattanooga. So far as surface Indications went, nothing developed to connect thot movement in theso stocks with the reported settlement in Loulsvlllo & Nashville. There were large dealings In various South- em and Southwestern stocks, but the resulting price movement was irregular. Missouri Pa cific was under considerable pressure, declin ing at one time 14, while Texas & Paolfic, on tho other hand, continued to advance. The largo buying of Southern Railway was with out much effect on the price. Tho weakness of Manhattan was attributed to fears of a strike by engineers and motormen. The rise in Pennsylvania and its subsidiary coal car riers was apparently In sympathy with the Hocking Valley movement. National Lead was reported in demand for some largo finan cial Interests. There was not much In tho general situation upon which to base a rise In prices, since the news showed little chango in conditions, which continued favorable to values. Tho Subtreasury Is absorbing a con siderable sum from the money market, but the premium on New York exchange at Chi cago Indicates that the tide of currency Is Still flowing this way. Foreign exchange is Arm, but tho 'very return made today by the Bank of France reflects the accumulation of re sources at that capital and the unlikelihood of further pressure from there for gold for repayment or loans. London showed encour agement over the evidences of the improved condition of the King pf England, and bought somo stocks. The buoyancy of a few stocks continued to tha close, which was active and steady. Central of Georgia bonds were tho onlv tm. ture of the bond market which was otherwise dull and irregular.
