Many counties, while having an overwhelmingly large majority of Republican voters, are run by Demo cratic officials. The method is simple. Few or no candidates file in the uual way. Instead a select few the leaders of the party in each county agree upon the names of men for each office and write in their names. In some comi ties, Jackson for instance, the method varies slightly from this plan. In stead of having merely an agreement, the leaders circulate slips with the names of prospective candidates among registered Democrats with the ie iuest that the voters write in the names. The candidate in question is will ing to accept the nomination in this way as it costs him nothing and lie knows that he will have the well organized machine behind him. Once the Democratic nominations have been slipped to the right mm, the voters are told that they should vote fur the best man, that party con nection is a matter of no consequence in county or state politics. As a rule, every county in the state has some Democratic newspaper, such as the Med- atoe THE INDEPENDENCE OF WOMEN BEGINS, NOT WITH THE BAL LOT, BUT WITH HER INDIVIDUAL PRIVATE CHECK ON THIS BANK. WILL VISIT STOCK YARDS IN PORTLAND JUNE 12 C. M. M'-AllHter, flcdd manaK'-r for tho Portland t.'nion Stock yard, at tended the luncheon of the Live Wires Tuenday noon and spoke on tho rela tion of the Portland t'nlon Stock yards to tho farmer. Mr. McAIUter Is now ornaril.inn an excursion over the line of the Willam ette Valley Southern railway for Mon day, June 12, as Monday is the heHt . day for visitors at the yards, as thou- Hands of livestock are unloaded and sold on the first day of the week. All of the livestock bleeders and farmers living along the line of the Willamette Valley Southern railway, who are in terested in livestock, are Invited to join the excursion. The Willamette Valley Southern railway will give special rates on that day and the Portland Union Stock Yards company will furnish all the vis itors with free entertainment and u banquet at noon. The purpose of the excursion Is to acquaint the breeders and farmers with the methods of weighing, grading, fattening and sell ing livestock shipped to the yarda for hale, and la intended to be educational along the lines above mentioned. All animals killed at the big pack ing plant are Inspected by govern ment officials who carefully guard against the sale or disposition of In fected animals, and this excursion is Intended to give lo the breeders and farmers information along those lines preparing their llwKtock for Hie mar ket. Mr. A. McAllHter In his speech cited several localities where no shipping had been done prior to his educational work among the breeders and farmers, but since ho haa taken this matter up direct with them, these points have contributed from iwo to four cars of livestock per week. All livestock shipped Into tho stock yards find a ready market, and then are five or six different commission companies constantly on tho ground ready to buy everything that Is hIiI:i ped to tho yards for tho different butchers and packers who deal In fresh meats, not only In Portland but In outside cities. The Stock Yards company is also carrying on educational work for the purpose of learning the farmers the best method In preparing their llv.! stock for market, so that the ship ments will be rated as "tops," and at the same tune discourage the ship ment Into the yards of poor unfatten'.'d animals. The price on carload lots Is governed by the condition of the live stock contained therein, and If the load Is well fattened and In prime con dition the price paid by the commis sion merchants are advanced accord ing to the quality, and therefore edu cational work along that line means mora money to the producer and bet- which wll be beneficial to them In ter product for the consumer. quarter of ac tion 24. towtmhlp I aojth, runt; .'
