I).. 1911. OREGON WEATHER (From tho Evening Telegram.) Never ngaln should we poke fun at, or find fault with the Oregon weather man; speaking, of course, of that par ticular Individual who furnishes weath er of the Western Oregon brand. It Is true thnt In the Winter season we have our full shnro of lowering skies and rain that tonka and drizzles nnd drives. Hut when we consider thnt on the average we go through from one Summer to another with tho green continuously showing on tho lawnaand n the fields, and that we escape tho biting cold nnd the distressful blizzard, or even the floods that devastate and lay waste; that the most pretentious thing we have la a freshet now and then, a 111 tie high water that adds the spice of adventuro to Oregon existence when we take an Inventory of all these felicities, as compared with the weather experiences of the East, we are not to be blamed for the boast that we live in God's country. The record will prove It to be an tncontrovcrtable fact that day for day, Hie year through, weather conditions In Oregon are the most delightful, com rortnbln and salubrious to be found In nny section of the country. They are Hie most free from distressful ex tremes. They present a more pleas ing and comfortable variety. The very best Oregon weather and there Is plenty of It Is not to be excelled In chnrm and deillght by the very best weather anywhere cIbo; while the very worst falls far short of tho discomfort nnd downright misery that result from weather vagaries In all other sections. If Oregon needed advertising as the region of most blessed conditions on thn face of the earth, Its weather rec ord, put In comparison with that of all other sections, would furnish the ready nnd convincing material. EAST, STRONG HERE Although the hide market in the edit shows a weakening tendency, ex actly the reverse Is the condition In Oregon. Dealer confidently look for an advance In prices here very short ly. At the present time more money ia being paid for hides here than else where In the country, but supplies are scarce. Tanners are not Interested and little business Is being put through from that score. An eastern report Just received, says that business ha practically been at a standstill for a week, with nothing of Importance being done In either packer or country hides. Some mall price concession were granted on the few scattering sale made by packers, and buyer axe looking - for still additional reduction on such PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORY Harvey E. All things considered the tendency on the part ot the buyers appear to be one of holding off, and this feeling is becom ing more general, as reports to the effect that European markets are easier this week would, plainly indi cate. OREGON HOP MARKET IS AT STANDSTILL Hops appear to be at a standstill In this state. No sales were made Satur day or Monday and there waa nothing today to indicate that any business was to be put through. The last sale made, so for aa can be learn eA was the purchase by Klaber, Wolfe k Net ter last Friday, of the Homer Link crop of 110 bales at Alrlle at 18 cents. This firm and T. A. Llvesley & Com pany are the only ones to pay this price in weeks. Efforts being made to boost the mar ket may be successful after a time. but it Is well known that with Eng land out of the market and no orders coming in from the east there Is not much chance to do business. Should England come back for further sup plies, growers will hold for higher price and the market will again, sag. At least this has been the experience this season for the moment buying as sumed any proportions for English ac count growers at once refused to sell owing to the belief that higher prices were about to prevail. It is presumed the same conditions would again rule should buying become general. It is also pointed out that the market can not advance unless England resumes buying here, which doea not Seem very probable Just at present. RISE IN LEATHER There is every reason to believe that leather prices are going higher, according to several authorities who base their reason for this opinion up on the fact that the surplus of leath er, comparatively small a year ago, has been digested. There are no bur densome stocks anywhere, they say. and the supply of hides Is Inconsider able. Since the passage of the currency bill has made money easier, bides have advanced despite the decline in quality and now it appears that poor quality hides are likely to bring rela tively higher prices than the short haired takeoff. Reports from the east last week were in effect that the hide market was showing a weaken ing tendency, but the authorities men tioned deny this, saying the market is on an excellent footing and Instead of reported drops, the price will advance in a very short time.
