REPUBLICAN MONEY. In his siech before the Ohla con vention Gov. McKinley said : "On the subject of money tbe republican party stands where it has always stood for good money." The last sample of republican money was the treasury note of 1890. The law authorising the notes was passed ex cluaively bv republican votes, including that of Mr. McKinley, who afterwards landed it upon tbe stump. It directed the secretary of the treasury to purchase silver bullion to the amount of 4,800,000 ounces per month, and to issue in pay ment therefor treasury notes. It pro- viditd that the secretary of tbe treasnry should redeem these notes, upon demand, "in gold or silver coin, at bis discretion" not at the discretion of the holder. And it provided further that the secretaty should coin of the silver bullion purchased "as much as may be necessary to provide for the redemption of the trnasury notes" issued in buying the bullion. The national currency was inflated with nearly $150,000,000 of theee notes, expressly redeemable In ailver under the terms and provisions of tbe law. The bullions purchased -with them steadily declmed in value and finally represented a very large loss for any purpose except coinage Into flat dollars worth about 50 cents. Under a desperate but necessary rul ing of the treasury department that these ailver notes would be redeemed In sold thev became a siphon with which to draw gold from the treasury They furnished thedecialve weight the "last straw" which created distrust of our currency at home and abroad and precipitated tbe monetary panic of 1893. President Cleveland was obliged to as semble congress in extraordinary session to repeal this law. And that repeal created the condition essential to the restoration of confidence and revival of business which in due time followed. The republican party, though at times infected with the unlimited greenbacks and the free-silver heresies, has generally stood for sound money. But in this latest instance it created a currency for politics only which proved alike dis astrous to the government and 1 to business, N. Y. World, ! Tub publishe r of a newspaper has one thing to rell and one thing to rent. He bas the newspaper to aell and the space in his columns to rent. Can anyone inform us why he should be expected to give awaj either the one or the other. He can do so If he chooses, and he does, as a matter of practical fact, furnished a great deal of space rent tree. But it doea not follow that be ought to be ex pected to do so. It ought to be recog nised as a contribution exactly as would be the giving away ot augar or coffee by e groceryman. Bat strange to say, it not looked upon in that light at all, i tevtrybody knows that the existence a newspaper depends as much on the ot of iu space and tbe sale of the paper . a merchant', auccess depends on selling his goods instead ot giving them away. J?. A BtsaATtoK waa created in the prison congress at Denver recently by a paper on "politics and crime," written oy Amos G. Warner, professer of economics and social science at Leland Stanford university : "If the state itself is under the influence of criminals." Said the doctor, "how can it hope to refore criminals T Betting the thief to catch the thief was tbe old-time doctrine. But tbe plan of setting the thief to reform a thief bad never yet Deen aeienaea, it.. Mnmsentativei of the state, with which criminals axe moat frequently brought Into contract, are policemen, police justices, sheriff, sheriff's deputies and jail keepers, oniy naie, u , hattor than the criminal themselves. Thm hnne of core of criminl. largely lies in the curative treatment in the Tni MMMment of nil cburuh property in Portland, except the bulldlnjr. for worship and the ground occupied by them, will meet with general approval . Captain Greenleaf aaya that the law makes them and them only exempt, .ml ha la not wllllnf to be a law unto himiu.tr. Tim Portland library in as genet, as is alao the various hoapitala and academies. It has been the custom to lot Ihese be exempt, from sheer force of public sentiment, rather than by the authority of law. If the public disap proves of this act they must appear before the board of equaiixatlon or an property held by churches is likely to lead to an abuse, therefore, the assessor haa done riht In obeying the atrict letter of the law. Wootihurn Independent Last year we. heard a Kuod deal about farmers "moving away from drought- striken Nebraska." We note with pleasure that enough farmers stayed in the state to this year latten their pockets with a round 1 100,000,000 for the grand crops ol every Kind in an parts oi me state. A year of disaster occasionally comesto the moat favored sections of the world. Ex. Oregon is a good place to "move to" but still it is not good business policy to chanite place of resi dence every time anything happens to that particular place. Let well enough alone. An Alabama negro visited Aurora last week with a phonograph and in the crowd that surrounded him and hia "machine" was one rank republican who was "giving it to the Southern democrats" for still keeping slaves, but the nearo said it was a lie. Another republican on the following day tried to convience the bystanders that the democrats were still keeping the negros in semi slavery when the aforesaid colored roan "knocked him flat" on bis back. This is how a Kentuckey judge charg ed a jury the other day: "If you be lieve what the counsel for the plaintiff haa told you, your verdict will be for the plaintiff; if, on the other hand, you believe what the defendants counsel bas told you. you will give a verdict for the defendent. : But if you are like me and don't believe what either of them said, I don't know what you will do." The jury disagreed. A Portland, paper telle atory of man in Portland who determined to spend all be made during the first year in advertising. He aoon found that it was impossible. For the simple reason that the more he advertised the more he made, and after a s trenuous effort to get rid of bis money in advertising he had to give it up. Several influential men from the East were In town during the past week looking around. They were much pleased with this piace but were susprised to see hand-written advertise ments posted around when there were printing offices in town, a sure sign of mossbackisn, they said,' and they did not Invest.
